Description

Introduced in 1926, Royal's Model P portable typewriter had a long gestation period dating right back to 1921 when the New York company, aware that they needed something special if they were going to compete with rivals Smith-Corona's hugely successful Folding model, submitted a 20-page patent application. They then went back to the labs and started tinkering, taking five whole years to perfect their new machine.

Unfortunately, by the time the Model P was actually available, pretty much everyone who needed or wanted a portable typewriter already had a Corona Folding, but Royal's efforts paid off - sales were not quite as high as they must have hoped, but once word got round that it offered similar quality to their legendary Model 10 desktop machine (known as "the Cadillac of typewriters") they sold well enough and around 260,000 produced before the model was redesigned and renamed the Model O in 1930.

This example is a first generation model with exposed tape loops. Inspection of the symbols underneath the tape loops (a simple arrow, rather than the words "ribbon feed") and the position of the feet prove it to have been made in 1927 - a fairly early one, prior to the second generation redesign with covered tape loops, serial number P90739. Royal's first successful portable typewriter, it was lightweight (or what was considered lightweight in those times at any rate, it's certainly a good bit heavier than a modern laptop) with tough ruggedness - the all-steel construction meant it was a machine that could take a few knocks. Nevertheless, after almost a century, an unrestored example in full working order such as this one is a rare find.

There are no loose keys and all work perfectly, as does the carriage return and other functions. The metal frame and enamelled panels are solid and in excellent condition, with only minor patina on the exposed metal parts. The paintwork is in excellent condition overall, though there are few flaky patches here and there as depicted in the photos. The gold logos are clean and still bright, and the bakelite parts are in good shape without cracks.

The leatherette-covered hardboard case is rather battered but is still faithfully performing its task. All the metal parts are present and the catch is still working; however, the leather handgrip has long since decayed and broken.

All in all, this is a beautiful machine which can be admired just as it is or could be treated to a full restoration to make is a real museum piece.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its 'Outstanding' services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

More than 4,100 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients' own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Day Therapy and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £8.56 million in 2020/2021 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. £4.29 million has currently been secured from the NHS, meaning that £4.27 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
