Description

Late model 35mm Olympus compacts have retained the value far better than almost any of the other big manufacturers and that's largely because while rivals were trying to reduce manufacturing costs so they could undercut one another, Olympus very wisely never cut quality (this did, unfortunately, mean that the likes of Nikon and Canon easily outsold them; Olympus found itself in financial difficulty as a result...but who's laughing now, when a basic Nikon or Canon compact from the same era is worth about a quid, eh?).

The Mju Zoom, introduced in 1993 and thus one of the earliest in the Mju range (known as Stylus in North America, the Mju name is still used for Olympus' compact digital cameras), is no different - whilst researching this one, we spotted a mint example on sale online for £429 which is, quite frankly, mad. Several others, also mint, were on offer at around the £250 mark, which is only slightly less mad, with tatty examples going for over £100. This one is a bit tatty with some scuffs and scratches on the exterior and, more seriously, it's lost the little clear plastic panel that fits into the film compartment window - this doesn't prevent use and it'd be easy to fix (either by replacing it with another, or making a suitable panel...or even just bodging it with clear tape) but we've taken it into account when setting a very low price. However, there are no cracks or missing parts, the seals are in fine order with no light leakage, the optics are excellent and it's in full working order. It's also got the original strap and case.

Olympus always insisted on quality lenses and the 35-70mm system used here is superb - sharp right through the zoom range and in all conditions. Where it really shines is the autofocus, a 200-step system which is genuinely amazing: lightning fast, razor sharp accurate and utterly silent, it's easily comparable to my modern DSLR with a pro level lens. Very unusual back in 1993 is the DX coding range, able to recognise and adjust settings for anything from ISO 100 to 3200 - the vast majority of rivals could only manage 100 to 400 (the Olympus Trip AF50, an excellent camera introduced a whole ten years after the Mju Zoom, could only recognise 100 to 400 too). As a DLX model, this one lacks the panorama feature found on some of its siblings, but it can be operated by remote control (not supplied, and apparently an after-market accessory) and is weatherproof...provided you do something about that missing panel, anyway.

The smallest and lightest camera in its class when released, it's still very compact today at 12 x 6.5 x 5cm and weighs only 220g without the required 6V CR123A battery (not supplied, widely available).

Due to the nature of this item it is not always possible for us to identify any missing parts.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
