Description

British firm Rolls Razor, based originally at Cricklewood in London, was a household name from the 1920s through to 1958 and their high quality safety razor, featuring a revolutionary automatic sharpening mechanism, could be found in probably a majority of bathrooms up and down the country - not least of all because a Rolls Razor was considered such an ideal gift to mark the occasion of a young man attaining the age of majority that giving one as a 21st birthday present became something of a tradition.

The company's name was chosen to suggest quality, and the typeface used on the boxes is deliberately similar to that used by Rolls-Royce although there was never any connection between the two companies. The sharpening mechanism really is very clever: the Imperial No. 2 is supplied in a metal case (which, in both of these examples, is decorated with a Greek-style pattern indicated that they were made after 1930) with a flap either side: open one and pull the internal lever and the blade is scraped along a whetstone, open the other and pull the lever and the blade is honed to fine edge against a leather strop. One of these examples is missing the blade and part of the handle; the other is complete and, given a bit of a clean, would still be entirely usable today despite being at least 64 years old. The complete example is, overall, in very good condition, though there's a little wear to the strop; it also includes the original box complete with instructions, care tips and quality control certificate.

Incidentally, Rolls came to an unfortunate end. After losing market share to disposable razors for some years, the company was purchased by a businessman of somewhat murky reputation named John Bloom, who immediately switched it to the production and retail of washing machines. Popular with the public because his direct-selling techniques allowed him to drastically undercut competitors, Bloom did not win friends among the established manufacturers and sparked off the Washing Machine War of the 1960s, with the Retail Trade Retailers Association putting aside £100,000 - a fabulous sum at the time - to combat direct selling. Bloom's main backer, who had loaned the company £8 million, pulled out. Bloom found himself accused of malpractice and questions were asked in the House of Commons; only six years after he'd bought it, but forty years after the company was established, Rolls went into liquidation.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
