Description

A collection of antique dinnerware by Keller & Guérin Luneville in the Old Strasbourg pattern. Included are seven French faience bowls decorated with light pink rims and a multicolored floral pattern made up of tulips, roses, hyacinths and several other flowers.

The old French pottery firm Keller & Guérin dates back as far as 1728, when it was established at Lunéville in Meurthe-et-Moselle - a prosperous commune known as the Versailles of Lorraine on account of the many ornate churches and chapels, many built under the orders of Duke Leopold I, and the palatial houses built by the wealthy people who followed him there after he fell in love with it and transformed it into a fashionable resort. These were, obviously, people used to the finer things in life; it was due to their presence in and patronage of the commune that Keller & Guérin built their first factory there. The company, and others that were set up afterwards, enjoyed enormous success both within France and in the surrounding nations; the King realised that imposing a heft tax on Lorraine pottery was going to be a nice little earner - however, as is still the way with the French to this day, the factory owners didn't shut up and pay up, instead moving their factories elsewhere. Keller & Guérin went to Saint-Clement in 1758, some 12km away; the Lunéville factory remained open, though it produced far less, allowing the company to continue using the name - and its association with opulence and luxury - on their backstamps.

They used a large number of backstamp designs over the course of the company's history, which is convenient for modern collectors as it allows Keller & Guérin pieces to be dated relatively easily - five of these bear the stamped crown and "Demi-Porcelaine Lunéville" device used between 1882 and 1922, allowing us to date that particular one to that era. Of those five, four also have an "I H" monogram hand-applied in the same dusky pink paint used for the hand-finishing of the pattern and presumably the work of one of the firm's decorators, while the remaining two have the monogram only - though all the bowls have an impressed code number, identical shape and same pattern style (though not the same pattern - each is different, a feature of Old Strasbourg), therefore leaving no doubt that any of them are not Keller & Guérin from the same era, it may well be the case that this is a collection put together from surviving individuals from other sets, rather than a true set of seven.

If we were required to guess, we'd put these at roughly halfway through the 1882-1922 timescale, estimating them to have been made between 1900 and the outbreak of the First World War. All seven bowls are in a highly acceptable, very good condition without serious damage, though most have minor imperfections around the lower edge of the rim and small chips to the foot. There are no cracks, larger chips or repairs.

Change of Mind

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
