Description

Considering it's 339 years old, this second edition of Gilbert Burnet's The Abridgement Of The History Of The Reformation Of The Church Of England is in remarkably good condition.

Burnet, born in Edinburgh on the 19th of September in 1643, was a highly respected scholar and priest who rose to become the Bishop of Salisbury; he was a remarkably liberal man (he had become fluent in Hebrew by studying with a rabbi - a highly unusual thing for any Christian, let alone a priest, to do in those times, and an indicator of the sort of man he was) in very intolerant, turbulent times so soon after the English Civil War and the Popish Plot. That liberal philosophy saw him gain admittance to the inner circle of and then become a close friend of the King, George III, who, despite our tendency to remember only his supposed madness, was in fact a very wise, effective and fair-minded monarch who cared for the well-being of his subjects and was vociferously opposed to the slave trade.

In the book, published by Richard Chiswell of the Rose and Crown in St. Paul's Church-Yard, Burnet provides a history of the Reformation as it was seen through expert eyes of the time, only a century after the events it describes and analyses, making it a valuable historical document in addition to being a fine addition to the library of any collector of antiquarian books. A full list of contents can be found online at https://quod.lib.umich.edu/e/eebo2/A77889.0001.001/1:4?rgn=div1;view=fulltext

The book is bound in full calf, which appears to be original, and features a frontispiece taken from an engraving depicting Henry VIII along with two double-page illustrations of some of the important figures of the era. There is some damage to the covers as seen in the photographs, and the first endpapers bear a bookplate and some inked ex libris inscriptions dating from 1687 when the book belonged to Thorna Bantoft; the free endpaper is torn. Moving on, the first illustration and title pages are in surprisingly good condition, as is the preface; as we progress through the textblock, there are a few torn pages though this, fortunately, is mostly limited to the corners of pages and so there is no loss of text. There is (of course) some foxing, but this is surprisingly mild and appears on a minority of pages, and there is no annotation. The real highlight is the binding, which is still tight so that there are no loose or missing pages.

All in all, a tight, bright and clean copy of a very rare, very old and enormously influential book, in far better condition than the vast majority of books from its era.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
