Description

Introduced in 1972 as Agfa's answer to Kodak's cheap-and-cheerful Instamatic range, which had hit the market a year earlier, and it's no wonder the German brand wanted a piece of that action - Instamatics sold more than 50 million units in the first seven years they were made.

The Agfamatic 200 was a little bit better-made than the comparable Instamatic, though most buyers were probably swayed by the "sensor"...though as there's no suggestion of a sensor window anywhere on the body or within the lens barrel, it would appear that "sensor" was just a marketing gimmick rather than a component of this model (the top-end 300 model really did have a built-in light meter). All the same, it's a nice-looking little camera with a partially brushed aluminium body (rather than the all-plastic Instamatic 100 it so closely resembles), a perfectly usable three-element Color-Agnar Parator lens, a nice clear and bright viewfinder and Agfa's trademark red shutter button. Being more expensive than comparable Instamatics, they never achieved quite such impressive sales figures and, for that reason, are far harder to find, making them a little bit more cool too.

This one is in excellent condition. There are a few very light scratches on the plastic back, but the aluminium top, bottom and sides are flawless and the plastic front is unmarked. The film advance works perfectly and the flash mount is clean and rotates correctly. The four exposure settings are for bright reflections, bright sun, sun and cloudy (roughly f/16, f/11 and f/8 at 1/80" for the first three and f/8 at 1/40" for cloudy) and are selected by rotating a ring around the barrel; this also works perfectly (there's a guide etched below the barrel to indicate minimum focal distance when each setting is selected, too). Inside the film compartment everything is clean and as it should be with intact light seals; the optics are clean and there is no dust or fungal growth inside. It's been tested, and is in full working order.

The camera is supplied in its original plastic box complete with the original metal wrist strap; there is also a printed insert but it's the version intended for the model one step below the 200 in the Agfamatic line-up. The other accessories originally supplied (presumably flash cubes, a roll of film and a manual) have been lost. The box is hazy and has some stress lines where it's been closed without the camera set into its slot, but is free of cracks; the wrist strap is excellent.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
