Description

Whilst the lack of a maker's mark means we can't be entirely sure which factory made this game pie dish, it's of the highly ornate caneware style produced by Wedgwood between the very late 18th Century and the start of the 20th Century.

Dishes of this type were in fact a Wedgwood innovation, the design having been proposed by Richard Lovell Edgworth to Josiah Wedgwood as early as 1786 with production starting in 1794, during a time when flour was scarce. A later innovation from around 1850 was the glazed internal dish in which the pie could be baked, then placed into the warmed unglazed outer dish to keep it hot - this example has this feature and is thus likely to date after 1850, and the handmade, rustic yet highly ornate style also suggests manufacture at around that time. Most examples were purchased when new by the university colleges; our warehouse is only a few miles from Cambridge and it's therefore entirely possible that the dish came from there.

The outer dish is 22cm long by 16cm (8.6 x 6.25") wide and, from the base to the top of the rabbit-shaped handle, is 13cm (5") high. The inner dish is 19.3 x 13cm (7.6 x 5.2") with a depth of 4.5cm (1.75"). The outer is decorated in very well-done typical caneware style mimicking wickerwork, which was a popular style for pie crusts in former times; on the base is a mark consisting of two characters which may be 66, 99 or SS - there is no other mark. The inner is plain. The lid is richly decorated with, in addition to the handle, a highly ornate design consisting of fruiting vines, ferns, pheasants, partridge, snipe and more rabbits with an ornamental border.

There are two chips in the rim of the outer dish and two more in the rim of the inner dish, which we have shown in the photos; the inner also has some crazing inside and out. The lid has one chip in the rim, but the decoration including the handle is in excellent shape without any missing parts. All three parts are discoloured from long-term use, but there are no cracks or other serious damage.

Due to the nature of this item it is not always possible for us to identify any missing parts.
For this reason we ask that you please check the pictures carefully, as these show everything that is included.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its 'Outstanding' services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

More than 4,100 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients' own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Day Therapy and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £8.56 million in 2020/2021 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. £4.29 million has currently been secured from the NHS, meaning that £4.27 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
