Description

Antique typewriter produced by the Royal Typewriter Company established in New York in 1904, which became famous around the world for the excellent quality of their machines. This product, the Model 10, was the company's first upright desktop typewriter and was a common sight in offices throughout the USA and other countries around the world.

• Model: Royal Model 10
• Date: 1920
• Serial No.: X525121
• Dimensions (W x D x H): 39 x 39 x 25cm (15.5 x 15.5 x 10")
• Weight: 13kg (28.6lb)

Most manufacturers hid the inner workings of their typewriters away, but Royal were so proud of the Model 10 that they fitted windows into the sides so that the intricate mechanisms could be seen. As testament to its robustness, they started to deliver them to buyers by fitting them with little parachutes and dropped them from a light aeroplane they'd purchased especially for this purpose - and of some 11,000 delivered this way, only ten suffered damage on landing.

Production began in 1913 and originally the windows were open; however, as this permitted dust ingress, the twin windows either side were filled with bevelled glass as is seen on this example dating from 1919 (serial number X525121) which, in 1923, were replaced with single windows. By the time production ended in 1931, more than a million had been sold, and it later found literary fame as the typewriter provided by Annie Wilkes to her captive Paul Sheldon in Stephen King's "Misery" - it features prominently in the 1990 film, and when you lift this one you'll know that it would indeed have been effective when used in the way that it is in the final scenes (no spoilers!) as it weighs 13kg (28.6lb).

It's in complete, unrestored condition with heavy patina on many of the bare metal parts, and the black paint has chipped off in a few places. The paper guide has a slight bend in the top right corner which should be fairly easy to fix and the rollers on the paper holder bar have perished, but are still in place. The Royal logo on the paper guide is heavily scuffed, but the ones on the front and back of the machine is merely faded. The platen is in good shape without any gouges or other damage to the rubber. All four rubber feet are present, but are perished. Some of the keys are sticky and the "R" typebar doesn't return fully when the key is released - it's not bent and looks as though it out to be an easy repair. All the functions are working and, crucially, the original bevelled glass windows are in place and do not have cracks or any other damage. The original leather-effect fabric cover is included, but is in very worn condition. A ribbon is included too, but is very old and dried out - we're leaving it in place for its historic value.

All in all, it's a beautiful and historic typewriter which, if restored, would be gorgeous and worth a great deal more.

Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £8.56 million in 2020/2021 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. £4.29 million has currently been secured from the NHS, meaning that £4.27 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
