"A philosopher of antiquity once described a happy state where the world should be ruled not by kings, dictators, politicians, economists or even scientists, but by a band of artists, painters, sculptors, architects, poets and musicians. They alone, so the philosopher thought, could set men free from base desires, from those horrible projections of themselves they call by the names of heroism, patriotism, glory and all the rest, from the false equation of possession with well-being and of incessant stimulation with happiness; they alone could inspire their followers to live like lords and owners of the universe instead of peaking and pining in the slough of materialism, afraid of attack from some powerful enemy and at the same time committed to a belief in increasing wealth as a panacea for all ills..."

Born in Cambridge in 1912, Olive Muriel Cook won scholarships to the Perse School and Newnham College in the city, earning a degree in modern languages. For a while after university she worked as a typographer, then took up a post at the National Gallery where she was involved in the removal of the collection to Wales for safekeeping during the Second World War; after the war, the began to write county guidebooks, meeting the photographer and artist Edwin Smith who would become her husband and the illustrator of many of her books, including this one.

Printed on luxurious Glastonbury Antique paper by P. Crampton & Sons in the Cambridgeshire village of Sawston, only 300 copies of this elaborately-decorated book were produced. Each was signed by both the author and the illustrator, and numbered - this example is Number 151.

There is a little wear to the book's ornate blue and gold cover, in the form of some bumping to the corners and, more seriously, a split 5cm (2") long in the top part of the spine - however, this does not, fortunately, affect the structure of the book and the binding remains tight, so that there are no loose or missing pages. Both boards, and the title pasted onto the front, are unmarked; so too are the end papers, flyleaves (of which there are many) and title pages. Moving into the text block, the creamy pages are entirely free of annotation and foxing. All in all, it's a very acceptable copy of a very beautiful, and very interesting, little book.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
