Description

In 1888, the Admiralty of the Royal Navy approached Professors Archibald Barr and William Stroud at what is now the University of Leeds and asked them to combine their expertise in engineering and physics and develop an improved optical rangefinder. Four years later, by which time Barr had returned to his native Scotland to take up the post of Regius Professor of Civil Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Glasgow, the rangefinder was ready and the Navy awarded them a contract for six, which inspired the two professors to set up their own optics factory. In 1895 they were working from a small workshop in Glasgow, but the company rapidly grew and forced them to relocate to new, larger premises. By 1905, the company was based at a brand new and purpose-built factory with a staff of more than 100 people.

Right from the start, the company had an excellent reputation as a world leader in the field of optical innovation and registered numerous patents for aircraft dome sights, periscopes and many other items, which brought in more lucrative military contracts. When the First World War broke out, the British military leaders became concerned that the Germans would gain an upper hand because of the excellence of Zeiss, and it was to Barr & Stroud that they turned to make sure that British ships, aircraft and ships were as well equipped as the enemy. Their binoculars were official issue aboard Royal navy ships for many years, and proved to be superbly engineered and hard-wearing.

The C.F. 18x30 civilian binoculars were manufactured from 1929 all the way up until 1971. Luckily for us, the company has always assigned serial numbers in chronological order, making it easy to date this pair, which are numbered 100141, to between between 1947 (starting 91768) and the end of 1950 (ending 106336).

The case for the most part looks in very good condition, some signs of wear from use but overall looks very good. Both the central focus adjustment and dioptre adjustment work very well with no issues, while the hinge is smooth and retains position perfectly. The leather straps are in good though worn condition - but still do the jobs they were designed to do!

Looking through the lens they appear to be working perfectly well. The optics are very good, though there are two tiny specks of fungus within the right barrel - fortunately these have not progressed to the point where they affect use, and collimation is accurate.

These binoculars come with the original lined leather case, straps and even the original instruction manual.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
