Beatrix Potter needs no introduction - she is world famous as the author of numerous children's books which remain as popular today, almost eighty years after her death, as when they were published. What few fans realise is that Potter was also a highly respected natural scientist; the highly detailed drawings she produced during her research are the reason the illustrations she made for her books are so good.

Neither does her most famous creation, the cheeky young rabbit Peter, named after Potter's own childhood pet and the subject of the very first book in her world-famous series known as The 23 Tales. Incidentally, Potter originally published Peter Rabbit privately, with just 250 copies printed. Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, a friend of the Potter family who had written and published 24 books at that time, liked Peter Rabbit but felt it would be better if he set it into verse, and then submitted his version to Warne - but Warne wasn't impressed and asked to see Beatrix's original instead, then published it in 1902 - worldwide sales are comfortably over 40 million, and one wonders how many pet rabbits have been named Peter since then.

Potter went on to write 22 more children's novels in the series, all of them published with her illustrations by Warne, adding numerous characters such as Squirrel Nutkin, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Mr. Tod, Jemina Puddle-Duck and the Fierce, Bad Rabbit who have become among the most famous in the history of children's literature; 92 years since the last in the series was published, they remain popular all around the world with children and adults and are among the best-selling books of all time.

This 1993 boxed set contains all 23, republished in the same 11 x 14.4cm illustrated hardback format used right from the first edition of Peter Rabbit (with the exception of Mr. Tod and Pigling Bland, which were published in a new format Potter hated and which was soon abandoned). All of the books are in excellent condition, though some of the jackets are very slightly creased around the edges; the covers beneath are unmarked, the spines are sound and solid and the binding is tight so that there are no loose or missing pages. The box, unfortunately, is in a somewhat poorer state: although in one piece without splits, the sides have been damaged most likely by lack of care when adhesive tape was removed and which has entirely ruined the illustrations either side. The top, back and base, and their illustrations, are in much better order.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
