Two books of traditional fairy stories aimed at young readers, collected and retold by children's author Marjory Bruce with beautiful and highly-detailed illustrations by Nora C. Fry and Honor C. Appleton. Both books are first editions, with the first published in 1933 and the second a year later.

The later book is very slightly larger than the earlier book but, as they are identically bound with spines covered in red cloth and have a similar aesthetic design, they make a very fine pair with plenty of nostalgia value harking back to a simpler time.

- The Book of Fairy Stories -

With sixteen traditional fairy stories including The Three Goats Named Gruff, The Ugly Duckling, Red Riding Hood, Puss-In-Boots, Hansel and Gretel and Cinderella and many others retold by Marjory Bruce, this is a beautiful featuring numerous eyecatching illustrations by Nora C. Fry and Honor C. Appleton. Printed on thick paper to resist tearing, it extends to 125 pages.

The front cover, depicting a witch reading to a group of childlike pixies, has extensive scuffing including a badly damaged lower right corner; it displays some discolouration but remains vibrant and the main body is intact. The rear is badly discoloured. The spine is also scuffed but intact and the binding is just starting to come loose at the lower end; all but one of the pages are still attached (the one that is loose is a colour print of Puss-In-Boots). The text block is otherwise in very good condition without any torn or missing pages, but there is foxing throughout; the flyleaves are discoloured and at the front there's a message ("To Ernest, from Auntie Hilda, Wishing him a merry Christmas, 1933"). Unusually for a children's book, there is no other annotation throughout the book and none of the black and white illustrations have been coloured in - therefore, condition is acceptable.

- More Fairy Tales -

Following on from the success of her The Book Of Fairy Stories in 1933, Marjory Bruce selected and retold another thirteen traditional fairy stories in this book but this time around wrote with slightly older children in mind, making them longer than in the previous volume.

Among the stories are The Pied Piper, Aladdin and The Wonderful Lamp, The Boy Who Learned The Language Of The Beasts and, very unusually for the times, two from outside the European tradition in The Brahman, The Tiger, And The Six Judges and Urashima Taro. Once again, she teamed up with Nora C. Fry and Honor C. Appleton who created the numerous highly-detailed illustrations found throughout the book.

The cover, bearing a depiction of Hansel and Gretel walking hand-in-hand into the woods by Vernon Soper, is scuffed around the edges and the top and bottom corners on the right are chipped; the reverse is plain and badly discoloured. The red cloth-covered spine displays minor scuffing but is intact; the binding is split in one or two places but remains tight and there are no loose nor missing pages, however, at least one page has a small tear. The flyleaves have foxing but, very unusually for a children's book, there is no annotation other than a message written on the first flyleaf (Auntie Hilda again; Ernest has been abridged to Ernie), scribbling or colouring-in anywhere throughout the text block. Overall, it's very acceptable and in better shape than most others.
