Description

With its excellent sharpness, ergonomics and rugged build quality combined with a price lower than many of the less well-appointed cameras on the market back when it was released, Canon's A550 compact digital snapper was called the best in its class by several reviewers - and with its superb zoom lens and 1/2.5" sensor, it's still a respectable camera which is more than capable of excellent results today, even if 7.1 megapixels no longer sounds impressive (remember, it' the size of the photosites and the quality of the glass that counts, not the megapixels!)

The lens has a zoom range extending between 5.8mm and 23.2mm, roughly equivalent to 35mm-140mm when scaled up into standard 35mm format terms. More importantly, maximum aperture is an extremely fast f/2.6 (reduced to f/5.5 at full zoom), which is a bit faster than the majority of good quality modern compacts and perfectly capable of freezing action in low light settings, especially as it's backed up by an ISO range of 100-800.

With the big manufacturers competing to see who can produce the most compact compact, many modern compacts are now a little too compact and ergonomics have suffered as a result. The A550, meanwhile, is just about right - it's small enough to fit comfortably into a pocket or handbag but not so small it gets lost in there, and there's enough room on the body for the various buttons and controls to be laid out in a way that allows someone with hands larger than those of the average toddler to access them all without problems.

Build quality is great, too: the body is plastic (which will have helped Canon keep the price low) but it has a pleasing heft to prove there's quality compenents inside and also suggest it'll survive a few knocks - it would be a superb camera for a child, and has enough features to inspire them to start thinking about their photos and what they can do to make them better.

This one is in superb condition with few signs of use. There are no cracks or scuffs to the body and the rear screen is almost perfect with only a couple of tiny scratches which can't be seen when in use. All the controls are functioning correctly and the built-in flash and lens cover are both in full working order. Most importantly, the optics are in perfect condition without marks or scratches, and there is no dust nor fungus within the barrel.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its 'Outstanding' services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

More than 4,100 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients' own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Day Therapy and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £8.56 million in 2020/2021 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. £4.29 million has currently been secured from the NHS, meaning that £4.27 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
