Description

The first 28-70mm ever produced as part of Canon's now legendary Electro-Optical System system, the EF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 II was introduced right back in 1988, a year after EOS was announced and before digital cameras were even on the market. Despite the high price tag of $450, its sharpness and excellent colour rendition immediately found fans and proved that Canon now had a worthy rival to Nikon's F system, and it remains a decent lens to this day.

The Arc-form drive is no longer in production and hasn't been used in any of Canon's lenses for several years, but on a simple and lightweight lens such as this it still powers the autofocus perfectly well - it's not quite as quick as newer systems and is certainly noisier, but unless you're a pro photographing fast sports (in which case, you're probably not going to buy this lens anyway) you're really not going to notice any lag. The manual focus and zoom rings are a little stiff, but this isn't a fault as most lenses tended to be so up until the mid-90s when the manufacturers suddenly realised smooth was the way to go. While it wasn't one of Canon's top-end models, it's good to see that they went for an all-metal mount rather than save a couple of yen with plastic.

It's not heavy but has a respectable heft suggesting there's a reasonable amount of technology packed into it - and there is: unlike many lenses in this class, it boasts ten elements in nine groups, including one aspherical element to control aberration, and a six-blade diaphragm offering a maximum aperture of f/3.5. One downside is that the front element rotates when the zoom extends which makes using polarisers and some other filters a pain, but if you can live with that it's a perfectly usable and decent quality which, thanks to its age, is also a real bargain.

It's in excellent condition: there are no scratches or scuffs on the exterior other than some very light marks that become visible when the zoom is fully extended, and the mount and contacts show no wear. More importantly, both the front and rear elements are spotless without any marks at all, and there is no dust or fungus evident inside. It has a rear cap, but the front cap is missing - we'll make sure that it's covered so that it remains in excellent condition.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its 'Outstanding' services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

More than 4,100 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients' own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Day Therapy and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £8.56 million in 2020/2021 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. £4.29 million has currently been secured from the NHS, meaning that £4.27 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
