Description

Just like vinyl records and music cassettes, the Super 8 motion picture film format has been enjoying a renaissance for the last decade or so - once the preserve only of people who refused to update to more modern cameras, it's become highly popular among students and art and experimental film directors, and Super 8 film festivals have sprung up around the world - the Cambridge Super 8 Film Festival just a few miles from our office attarcts a large number of directors and fans each year, which has won it the backing of the Super 8 film producing industry.

Super 8 was developed from the earlier 8mm film, with the most notable update being the magnetic oxide audio strip changing from the right to the left and a larger exposed area; the perforations are also smaller, meaning that the two formats are not interchangeable. To complicate matters, various different types of Super 8 film were developed - this model is compatible with the standard Kodak system type, with sound recording capability or silent.

Fitted with a very high quality Chinon 7-21mm lens with power zoom and f/1.2-45mm aperture range, the 30RXL was mass-produced for amateur home movie-making but, thanks to excellent build quality, decent range of features qand wide availablity of spare parts and accessories has in recent years become popular with more serious directors.

This example has been bench tested and was found to be in full working order; we were unable to test with unexposed film (we haven't got any) but a reel of dummy film ran through without any problems. The protective film over the side display panel is still in place after forty years, suggesting very little use. The shutter is working perfectly, as are the zoom, power zoom, focus and aperture adjustment; the light seals are currently doing what they should but show notable decay and will need to be replaced at some point fairly soon. The film compartment door opens smoothly and latches closed as intended, and the compartment has only minimal dust; the battery compartment cover also opens and closes as it should, and the contacts within it are clean without corrosion or residue. Most importantly, the optics are excellent: the objective lens is pristine and there is only a minimal amount of dust behind it, which will not affect use, and the viewfinder is clear and bright.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
