Description

If you're a collector of diecast models, you'll already know the Lledo story... Matchbox, which had been making diecast models in London for many years, was bought out and all the machinery was shipped to Macau to take advantage of cheaper production costs, then former Matchbox bosses Jack Odell and Burt Russell went over, bought it back and returned it to Britain to set up a new company (reversing Jack's surname in the process).

Anyway, alongside Dinky and Corgi, Matchbox has long been among the top three names in the diecast model world. Their vehicles are among the most in demand and fetch among the highest prices, and their quality - both in terms of build and accuracy, which are immediately obvious when compared to the models made by - well, certain other companies. Odell and Russell initially specialised in promotional models but in addition to using the old Matchbox moulds, they kept the Matchbox tradition alive; Lledo models, therefore, closely resemble Matchbox models and are of similar quality, and the best of them all are the Vanguards series - larger models, similar in size to the Matchbox Superkings series, with highly detailed exteriors and interiors closely matching the real cars they were based upon.

All of the models in the collection have been used as ornamental display items rather than as toys, and as such are in unusually good condition without any serious damage or missing parts. They are all in their original, unrestored paintschemes and, where fitted, all spare wheels and other fittings are intact.

In this collection, which numbers 28 vehicles in total, there are nine vehicles from the scale Vanguards series. All Vanguards models are built to 1:43 scale and, as stated above, were the company's flagship range, offering a far higher degree of realistic detailing than the cheaper models.
• VW Beetle Cabriolet - excellent, with minor manufacturing faults (seams on wings, lump on bonnet); folded hood, bumpers, steering wheel all intact; pristine paintwork; clear and scratch-free transparency; no number plates
• Austin Morris 1800 - very good with a damaged wiper (which seem to be made of very fine-guage wire on this model, for some reason) and light scuffing to bonnet and roof; clear and scratch-free transparency; all chrome parts and number plates intact
• Ford Anglia Van - good, with some scuffs to the bonnet and two missing wing mirrors; in AA Road Services livery; all chrome parts intact; no number plates
• Austin A35- excellent despite light pitting to body; with red interior; all chrome parts and number plates intact; minor scuff to windscreen transparency
• MGA MK I 1600 - excellent; pristine paintwork and beutiful interior; all chrome including exhaust in superb order; steering wheel and number plates intact; clear and scratch-free transparency
• Rover 2000 - excellent, with minor imperfections in the paintwork of the roof; all chrome parts and number plates intact; near spotless transparency
• Ford Consul Capri - very good with some scuffs to paintwork; chromed parts and number plates all intact; red interior; light scuffs to transparency
• Triumph Herald - very good with minor imperfections to paint and two missing wing mirrors; chrome in good order; transparency has some scratches; no number plates
• Thames Trader - excellent; in Cleveland Motor Spirit livery; double wheels on rear axle; spare wheel intact; clear and scratch-free transparency; no damage to plastic parts (please note: while guides insist all Vanguards were 1:43, this item appears to be smaller scale)

Days Gone was the first series of vehicles Lledo produced, using the Matchbox Yesteryear moulds Odell and Russell brought back from Macau, identical to that range in both size and quality.
• H Preston traction engine - excellent; highly detailed model, better than some in larger scale; pristine paint and clean canopy
• T.W. Gascoige traction engine - excellent; pristine paint and canopy; made from same mould as the item above and therefore identical except for colour and decoration
• Reid's Stout steam wagon - excellent, with one slightly misapplied decal on the right side of the flat bed; chain undamaged, double wheels on rear; Watney's London/Reid's Stout livery; brass funnel
• Royal Mail van - excellent; George VI era Post Office livery; chromed grille in good order; gold wheels; light pitting in paint is a manufacturing fault
• Kent County Council Ambulance - excellent; beautiful model in Kent County Council Health Department; superb silver-painted detailing on grille; double rear wheels; scratched on one side of windscreen and rear side window on left
• PO Telephones van - excellent with very light scuffing to the wings; dark green GPO phones network (which makes it look like a military vehicle); produced without window transparency; one of the best models in the series
• Pickford truck - very good with discolouration to white cab roof; in Pickfords Heavy Haulage livery; produced without window transparency; spare wheel intact
• Robert Brothers Circus truck - excellent, Robert Brothers Circus livery; double wheels on rear of cab and trailer; produced without window transaparency; decals in good order
• Stratford Blue bus (DG 15) - excellent; no damage to plastic rails of upper deck; double wheels on rear; produced without window transparency; chromed parts and decals in good order
• Green Line Bus - very good with light scuffs to paintwork; silver roof excellent; decals for "J" service (Bushey, Stanmore, Edgware, Cricklewood, Oxford Circus, Charing Cross, Clapham, Tootong, Mitcham, Sutton); produced without window transparency
• Campbell's Soup van - excellent; Campbell's Soup livery; red solid wheels; paint, chrome and decals excellent; produced without window transparency
• Wimpey Construction Truck & Trailer - excellent; from same mould as the Pickford truck but in Wimpey Construction livery with detachable low-loader trailer, total length 22.5cm; produced without window transparency; decals and paint pristine; spare wheel and winch intact
• Cinzano VW Van - very good with some scratches to the paintwork, but probably the nicest model of the 13; blue Cinzano livery with decals; light scratches to window transparency; silver wheels

Lledo made a very wide range of promotional items with several hundred models featuring different colour schemes and decals made from just thirty moulds in the company's first few years. Often given away for free or sold very cheaply, they were often given to children; therefore, it's ununsual to find examples in such good condition as there.
• Cambridge Evening News - very good with light scuffs; in Cambridge Evening News livery with gold grille, windscreen surround and wheels; decals in good order; produced without window transparency
• Mars - very good, with light scuffs to paintwork; decals, chrome parts and roof rack all in good order; spare wheel intact
• Royal Mail - excellent; identical mould to the Post Office Telephones van above, but in typical red George VI-era livery with black bonnet and roof; some pitting is a manufcaturing fault rather than damage
• Daily Telegraph - excellent; in August 15th 1945 (Japan surrenders) livery; some minor manufacturing faults in paintwork; decals and chromed parts in good order

Lledo also made some individual vehicles, including models to tie in with TV shows such as the Only Fools And Horses van below, which did not fit into any of the series of vehicles they produced. There are two examples in this collection.
• Reliant Regal Supervan - very good with a split in the front tyre; in bright yellow with Trotters Independent Trading Co. signwriting - Only Fools And Horses; paintwork, decals and roof rack all in good order; window transparency (complete with "tax in post" note in windscreen) excellent
• Steam Wagon - very good with light scuffs to paintwork; in "Scotland's oldest distillery" livery but without a company name; green solid wheels; brass funnel in excellent order; six plastic barrels in flat bed; double wheels on rear; drive chain intact

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
