Description

The Dassault Mirage III went into service with the French Air Force in 1961, five years after its first flight and three years after it became the first European aircraft to achieve Mach 2 in level flight. Its graceful delta wing design proved to be extraordinarily versatile, enabling the aircraft to serve in fighter, ground attack and reconnaissance roles with equal distinction. This made it a popular choice for export with Argentina, South Africa, Israel, Australia, Egypt and Pakistan all using the Mirage (in fact, Pakistan still does to this day, and in 2019 was in negotiations with Egypt to purchase their 30 retired Mirages) and it became one of the best-known fighter/bombers of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Revell traces its history back to 1943, when a company named Precision Specialties started making miniatre plastic replicas mostly for promotional use (the first was a washing machine). Before too long, founder Lewis H. Glaser realised he could be making toys too, which soon became a success - he renamed the company Revell, based on the French word "reveille" meaning a new beginning. Plastic model kits came soon after and Revell had a reputation for outstanding attention to detail: in 1960, it was reported in the press that the detailing on the company's models of US Navy warships was so accurate that several model kits had been purchased by the Kremlin for study by the Soviet Naval Intelligence department. Revell's glory days were in the 1960s and through to the end of the 1970s, with subsidiary factories opening up overseas in order to keep up with demand, including in Britain where this kit was made. Unfortunately, at around that time Revell lost a lot of money it had invested in the short-lived slot car racing craze, leading to financial problems and an eventual buy-out in the mid-80s by a French company which allowed quality to slip; Revell very nearly went under but was eventually saved by its own German arm which was able to buy the rest of the company - now based in North Rhine-Westphalia, it is once again profitable and has regained the excellent reputation it once had.

This kit, H-225, was introduced in 1976 and remained in production into the middle of the 1980s. Luckily for us, Revell made small changes to the box over the years whch allows this example to be accurately dated to between 1977 and 1980; it's the British version of the kit made at Potters Bar in Hertfordshire, not the very similar Brazilian version which is sometimes confused with it (despite having the text on the box in Portuguese). As can be seen from the photos, the outer box is a little battered but remains stucturally sound without splits, rips or water damage, and while the corners are scuffed the printing remains bright and distinct. Inside, and again as depicted in the photos, the plastic bag has been opened, but all the parts remain attached to the three sprues and the decals (allowing the aircraft to be finished as one of three versions) and instructions are intact and in good condition.

Please note that, as is usually the case with plastic model kits, glue and paints are not included.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
