Encore guitars don't have the best reputation, largely because most people nowadays associate the name chiefly with the sub-£75 Strat rip-offs that haunt the world's online selling sites and catalogues. However, move up the pricing scale a little and Encore instruments improve dramatically.

This one, the E99, is designed to resemble the legendary Gibson Les Paul, which it does quite convincingly (thoguh scale length is a little less at 24 inches rather than 24.75) - and to bear even a passing resemblance to a guitar as iconic as the Les Paul, it's got to be at least reasonably well-made. It was also designed with the assistance of the famous Trev Wilkinson, who has more than half a century's experience in the design and manufacture of guitars and components, which rather begs the question of how do they manage to retail it at around £250 brand new?

The answer is in the materials: the body is basswood (better known in the UK as the lime tree - "basswood", the American name, sounds cool so that's what guitar companies call it), which is far cheaper than traditional materials yet thanks to its density and very fine grain offers similar acoustic properties. The neck and headstock are maple, which isn't the cheapest option but does have properties making it ideal for this use that cannot be matched by any other wood; hence its use in any guitar but the very cheapest; the fretboard probably isn't rosewood, which has become far more expensive in recent years because the Dalbergia trees it comes from (not rose bushes!) have been designated an endangered species - whatever it is made from looks and sounds the same. The hardware is all unbranded, from the TOM-type adjustable bridge to the diecast tuners, but it's quality stuff - quite possibly Trev Wilkinson stuff. Finally, just like the real Les Paul, you get two volume controls and two tone controls, and two humbucking pickups.

This example has been used, and has the usual scuffs to show for it - scratches here and there on the high gloss black finish, a couple of dents and gouges. However, non of this affects the instrument's playability, and structurally it's all in good order - the neck is straight and there's no damage to the truss rod, nor any serious damage such as cracks; the pickups and controls all work. Most important, of course, is how it sounds - and so far as we can tell due it currently only having five strings, it sounds excellent, comparable to a far more expensive guitar. For that reason, we've set a low starting price.

Returns

Change of Mind

If when you receive your order you are not completely satisfied, you may return the items to us within 30 days for a refund. Returns will be processed within three working days once the goods have been received by us.
