Born in Barcelona in 1952, the artist Josep Domenech came from a long line of carpenters with a passion for fine art - when Domenech developed the same tastes his father, who had taught painting, was therefore willing to pay for his son to have private art lessons. Yet, although the bnoy showed talent, it was always a given that once his school days came to an end, he would go to work in the family's carpentry shop.

This came to pass, but fortunately Domenech was able to enrol at the local academy where he learned the basics of drawing and working in charcoal; he scored highly enough in his final exams to be accepted on a three-year Art and Design course at the Escola Massana. In 1974, aged just 22, he was invited to exhibit at Sala Parés, the oldest and among the most prestigious galleries in Barcelona and one with a rich history of giving young Catalonian artists the opportunity to show their art to the general public for the first time (one young local to get his big break at the Sala Parés went on to become quite well-known - his name was Salvador Dali).

Domenech continued to work as a carpenter right up until 1989 when he decided the time was right to devote his life to painting; he continues to paint, and still live in Barcelona, to this day. He has become respected as one of Spain's most prominent contemporary figurative artists with a large following throughout Europe and beyond - his work, which usually features female figures and has been described as expressing strong feelings of quiet, self-reflection and contemplation, is eagerly sought out by collectors.

This framed print, produced using the giclée process, is Number 17 in a strictly-limited run of 195 reproductions of one of his most famous paintings, Esbozos De Tu Presencia ("Sketches of your Presence"). It depicts a young woman, with her curly hair in a ponytail and a blissfully relaxed expression on her face; she wears a gown or nightdress and large hoop earrings. It is highly typical of Domenech's style, with a muted palette of many shades of brown with some pink details, which gives it the look of an aged sepia photograph - or, perhaps, the wood with which the artist once worked. It is mounted in a black wooden surround which has then been set into a antique-style gold-painted wooden frame; unfortunately, it was not protected by a layer of glass and as a result there two small white marks on her shoulder and near her forehead. A third mark on her face at first looks like damage but can be seen in photos of other copies online, proving that it's part of Domenech's textured background rather than a fault. It is fitted with loops and cord ready for hanging.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
