"The following attempt at a rationale of book-typography first appeared as n article in No. 7 of The Fleuron pulished six years ago, when it lso went out of print. Although several partial reprints have been made-and I have heard of at least one complete, but unauthorized edition-nevertheless I still receive demands from printers as well as from those outside the trade for whom it was originally written. This edition is printed at the request of American correspondents. As the brevity of the essay seems to be one of its most approved qualities, no expansion, and only slight revision, has been made. The following text is, therefore, identical with that of 1930 except for a few lines. - S.M., London 1936

Though largely self-taught, British graphic designer Stanley Morison became one of the most influential figures in the history of book typography and, while well-known for his superb recreations of texts from centuries ago, is to a large degree responsible for how books look today - in fact, he personally commissioned several of the most common typefaces used in the 20th and 21st Centuries, including Times New Roman.

This little book was intended to be read by people who were not involved in the printing business but wanted to know more about it, yet its clever, concise explanations of how things are done the way they are and why soon made it a big hit with printers too. Published simultaneously by the Macmillan company in New York and the Cambridge University Press in England (this one is a US edition), it features an extremely unusual dust jacket - rather than being made of paper as is typically the case, it's a sheet of clear plastic with the title printed directly onto it. In this example, there are tears in the top right corner on the front and rear, but these are relatively minor faults and the jacket is not torn right through; that it has survived at all is unusual. Below it, the boards are in good shape with only very minor discolouration; the end papers are unmarked, but there is pencil on the top margin of the first flyleaf. Beyond, the title page is unmarked and, while there is very light age-related yellowing, there is no annotation or foxing at any point through the text block. The book is structurally sound with tight binding, so that there are no loose or missing pages.

To sum up, a superb example of a fascinating little book - hard to find in any condition, and very scarce when as good as this one.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
