Flower Fairies Of The Summer was Barker's second Flower Fairies book, first published in 1925, and the first for which she received royalties - she had been paid £25 for the rights to Flower Fairies Of The Spring, which was published two years earlier and had been a success, her name already being well-known to the public for the very popular postcards and religious-themed works she painted for various Christian organisations. This edition is undated; however, on the back of the jacket is a list of other titles by Barker up to Flower Fairies of the Wayside, published by Blackie in 1948, but not the next book she produced for the publisher in 1950 - it seems likely, then, that this copy was printed between 1948 and 1950.

Although they always had adult fans, Flower Fairies books were more frequently given to and collected by children; earlier copies in good condition are, therefore, relatively scarce, and examples retaining their dust jacket such as this one are unusual. The jacket, unfortunately, is in quite poor condition, with several rips and some discolouration, but it's not torn through and there are no missing parts. Beneath it, the hardcovers, including the illustrated front board, are in much better shape: the edges and corners are a little bumped but only lightly so, the colours are vibrant and the spine is in good shape. The end papers and flyleaves are illustrated with one of Barker's drawings and have some very slight discolouration but are otherwise completely unmarked, as are the title pages; the binding is tight so that there are no loose or missing pages, and whilst there is some very minor age-related yellowing there is no foxing nor annotation at any point. All of the full-colour plates, depicting the fairy featured in each of the poems, are in superb order.

Due to the nature of this item it is not always possible for us to identify any missing parts.
For this reason we ask that you please check the pictures carefully, as these show everything that is included.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
