Description

Bridge cameras are intended to provide a halfway house between the simplicity and convenience of compact cameras and the versatility and quality of SLR cameras - and while Fujifilm's much lauded FinePix S8200 has been around for 9 years, it received excellent reviews across the board when released by managing to offer the best of both worlds packed into a compact shell packing a superb 40x optical zoom and 16 megapixel resolution.

To some people, 16 megapixels might not sound impressive these days. However, it's actually still a high resolution today and equal to 4608 x 3456px: for comparison, a 4k TV screen (which is much higher resolution than Full HD), is "only" 3840 x 2160px - in other words, 16MP is more than enough to blow up photos to huge sizes with no loss of detail and no pixelation. It's also good enough to record Full HD video.

Secondly, all the megapixels in the world are of no use at all if the lens system can't transfer quality light to the sensor, nor if the sensor isn't able to gather that light and convert it into raw data for the processor to turn into an image file. Fortunately, the S8200 is superb in both departments: the Fujinon EBC 17 element/12 group lens system has ED and aspherical elements to ensure sharp images with an absolute minimum of chromatic aberration - and although the 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor may be a little smaller than standard for this class of camera, with 1.34μm pixel pitch it does everything expected of it to a very high standard indeed.

The S8200's true USP, though, is of course that 40x zoom. Actual focal length is 4.3 - 172.2mm, but scaled up into 35mm (SLR) terms that's equivalent to 28 - 960mm. To achieve that sort of range with an SLR, you'd need four separate lenses and quite possibly a truck to carry them around in - a 960mm SLR lens is an enormous piece of kit, costing five-figure sums. The fact that maximum aperture decreases to just f/8.4 at full zoom is proof that Fujifilm wanted to make sure this camera was actually usable, rather just boasting the numbers that look in magazine articles.

Unusually, the S8200 is powered by four AA batteries rather than a Li-on type. This does have certain advantages: AAs can generally be obtained easily virtually everywhere, so it won't matter too much if you run out of juice during a shoot - and that's a good thing, because a camera like this needs a lot of juice. Rechargeables, with at least one spare set to keep in your camera bag, are highly recommended.

It's been fully bench tested and was found to be in full working order: all features and functions operate correctly, the optics are superb without scratches and dust or fungal growth within the barrel, and the screen is clear, bright and without dead pixels or other issues. It's also in excellent cosmetic condition: feeling better made and with a more reassuring heft than many bridge cameras at this price point, the shell is entirely free of cracks and has only a small number of extremely light scuffs which can only be seen on very close inspection. Battery and card compartment doors are all in place and latch closed correctly, there is no rubbing to the text printed on the body and the tripod mount appears unused.

The camera is supplied with a Fujifilm strap and the original lens cap and a quality Case4Life bag with internal padding, several pockets and a shoulder strap; please note that no other accessories, an SD card and batteries are included. Please note that the rabbit is a valued member of staff assisting us in showing that the camera works, and is also not included (yes, experience has taught us we really do have to specify this).

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
