Description

Bridge cameras are intended to provide a halfway house between the simplicity and convenience of compact cameras and the versatility and quality of SLR cameras - and while Fujifilm's much lauded FinePix S8100fd has been around for 14 years, it received excellent reviews across the board when released by managing to offer the best of both worlds packed into a compact shell packing a superb 18x optical zoom.

18x doesn't sound much today when even compact point-and-shoot cameras offer more, but it's important to realise that the S8100 is 18x optical zoom, rather than digital: optical zoom is more complex and expensive to produce, but it delivers far better results than digital zoom, but is far more expensive to produce - which, along with quality f/2.8 glassware, is why this camera despite having only 10 megapixel resolution is still capable of producing better photos than a modern compact camera with 20 megapixels or more.

Zoom, of course, magnifies camera shake as well as the image, which means that even the most steady-handed photographer will start to see some blurriness when shooting at 18x without a tripod and remote shutter release. However, another benefit of a bridge camera is that, being larger than a compact (though still much smaller than a DSLR), there's more room inside for technology, such as this model's Dual Image Stabilization system which uses both sensor-shifting and dedicated metering to increase ISO (= higher shutter speed) in order to counteract shake and vibration, enabling sharper images even at full zoom range.

On top of that, and although there are plenty of presets for fully-auto shooting in almost any conditions, there are far more controllable functions than would be found on a compact giving a much greater scope for fiddling should you wish to venture beyond the fully automatic setting, a decent flash and a viewfinder which outclasses any modern compact. All in all, it remains a very good all-rounder and an ideal choice for anyone who wants to progress beyond simple point-and-shoot photography, but doesn't feel ready for - or just doesn't want - the complexity of a DSLR. However, one thing that must be added is don't buy it if you're looking for a camera to produce high-quality video, because that's the one area where the digital cameras of 14 years ago have been left well behind: 640x480 at 30fps will look fine on the built-in display, but will disappoint on modern HD screens when compared to recent cameras.

This one has been bench tested and was found to be in full working order: all features and functions operate correctly, the display is clear and free of scratches, marks and dead pixels, the viewfinder is clear and bright and, most importantly, the optics are excellent without scratches, marks, dust or fungal growth within the barrel. It's in very good shape cosmetically too with some light scuffing to the rubber handgrip but no scratches or cracks to the shell; the memory card compartment, battery compartment and input/output covers are all in place and latch closed as intended. It is supplied with a lens cap, strap and its original leather-effect carrying case complete with shoulder strap; please note that the carrying case is a little worn (though still very usable) and no cables or other accessories are included.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
