Borley Rectory needs no introduction at all to students of the paranormal - the old Victorian rectory in Essex was, until it was demolished in 1944, the site of the most famous haunting in the world and became world-famous for the numerous supernatural occurrences said to have taken place there.

This the Society for Psychical Research's in-depth investigation, conducted much to the chagrin of their arch rivals National Laboratory of Psychical Research, into the house, what is purported to have happened there and, perhaps most of all, the NLPR's founder Harry Price, who had become the world's best-known parapsychologist. The authors, Eric Dingwall, Kathleen M. Goldney, and Trevor H. Hall, conclude that natural phenomena caused by the unusual design of the house and rats explained the majority of the supposedly ghostly activity, whilst everything else could be put down to tricks played by some of the Rectory's residents and by Price himself - who just happened to be an accomplished stage magician, with his skills as a magician matched only by his skills as a self-publicist.

It's a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in Borley Rectory and the supernatural, as well as for those who don't believe in the paranormal but are interested in why others do.

This is probably the best condition example of this book I've ever seen. It retains its dust jacket, which is in superb condition without any tears, a clean front free of marks, only very minor scuffing to the corners and minor discolouration to the back. The cloth-covered boards beneath it are rich purple with one or two very small marks. The flyleaves have no marks at all. The spine is good and solid and the binding is tight, so there are no loose nor missing pages, and there is no annotation anywhere throughout the book. There is very slight age-related yellowing to the page margins, but there is no foxing at all.

Folded within the book is a page torn from the April 11th 1963 edition of The Listener magazine, in which journalist Montague Elelman recounts a visit to the Rectory in 1946, shortly before its burnt-out shell was demolished - we're including this with the book due to its historical interest.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its 'Outstanding' services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

More than 4,100 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients' own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Day Therapy and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £8.56 million in 2020/2021 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. £4.29 million has currently been secured from the NHS, meaning that £4.27 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
