Description

• Title: Her Majesty's Glorious Jubilee 1897
• Subtitle: The Record Number Of A Record Reign
• Author: Various
• Date: 1897
• Publisher: The Proprietors of The Illustrated London News
• Printer: Orford Smith & Co., St Albans, England

Measuring 30.5 x 40.4cm (12 x 16"), this is a large format special commemorative publication produced by the Illustrated London News to mark the 60th year of Queen Victoria's reign in 1897 - which was then the longest reign of any British monarch, beating the previous record of 59 years and three months set by George III, and which stood until our current Queen Elizabeth beat it (and became the longest reigning female monarch in world history) in 2015.

The cover, printed in full colour and very much typically Victorian in style, features portraits of Victoria, Albert and various ancestors and descendants. Within are fifty pages, most of them richly decorated with ornate margins, beginning with a brief introduction by the author Sir Walter Besant. In addition, there are various articles on Britain during Victoria's time, a timeline of the British monarchy, numerous full-colour illustrations and an article on her homes and more.

Chromolithographic plates in full colour: I Coronation Robes, II Jubilee procession, III Queen's Council, IV Marriage of the Queen, V Christening of Princess Royal, VI Marriage of the Prince of Wales, VII The Queen 1887, VIII Battles, IX Naval Review at Spithead 1855, X House of Commons 1860, XI Scientific progress, XII Family group at Windsor.

Perhaps most interesting from a social history viewpoint are the many adverts which appear at the start and end of the book, including examples for US-made Columbia Bicycles, Fry's cocoa, St. Jacob's Oil (which, purportedly, cured just about every ailment that exists), Mellin's Food (with testimonial written by Victoria's eldest child, also called Victoria, who had married Frederick III of Prussia and thus became Her Imperial Highness The Empress of Germany, no less, and would die four years later - only a few months after her mother), the "marvellous restorative" Hall's Wine containing coca (from which cocaine is made), "Cocoaine" (a cheap, non-narcotic, chocolate-based alternative to cocaine) and, since no Victorian publication would be complete without it, Pears' Soap. Best of all is the advert taking up the entire back cover, for Eno's Fruit Salts ("The jeopardy of life is greatly increased without such a simple precaution", apparently) - featuring a very young angel bearing a tray of fruit and Fruit Salts, it's the work of an unknown artist in the Pre-Raphaelite style.

Overall, it's in very good condition, though the cover has become detached from the text block and has been inexpertly repaired with adhesive tape. However, whilst there is some damage along the margins and extensive discolouration to the Eno's advert on the reverse, there are no tears, stickers or handwriting. Things are much better inside: there is some foxing to the first few pages of adverts, but otherwise the text block is in unusually good condition - it's tightly-bound, foxing and discolouration appear in only a few places and are minor, there are no torn or missing pages and there is no annotation anywhere.

All in all, it's not museum quality, but the vast majority of these have been split up to create framed pictures, so complete copies such as this one are uncommon - and finding a better example would be a tall order.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its 'Outstanding' services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

More than 4,100 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients' own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Day Therapy and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £8.56 million in 2020/2021 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. £4.29 million has currently been secured from the NHS, meaning that £4.27 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
