Description

Born in 1954, Howard Phipps developed an interest in art during childhood and went on to study Fine Art Painting and Printmaking at Cheltenham Art College between 1971 and 1975, then spent a year as an undergraduate at the University of Sussex. After spending some time in Devon after university he relocated to Coombe Bissett near Salisbury where he still lives to this day, and most of his work is inspired by the beautiful landscapes of England's West Country and the animals and plants that make their home there. This example is, therefore, unusual in that it depicts a scene near Pen-y-Ghent Fell in the Yorkshire Dales.

Although his oil paintings are widely admired, Phipps is best known for his woodblock prints which he creates in the time-honoured manner. First, he selects the right piece of very hard boxwood which permits much finer detail than the softwoods typically used in woodcut pictures; then, using traditional tools such as the burin and spitsticker, he meticulously carves into the endgrain a highly detailed mirror image of the scene he wishes to produce - and close inspection of his work, including this example, demonstrates just how meticulous this process is, because he manages to achieve a truly remarkable level of fine detail. Black ink is then rolled to this woodblock before a sheet of high-quality art paper is placed on top and pressure is applied, in Phipps' case by using an Albion press built in 1862. Despite boxwood's hardness, prints made using it are, like all woodprints, are by their very nature limited edition: they can be used only a certain number of times before they wear and can no longer produce the very precise resolution Phipps demands, so that a new one which will of course be different must be made.

Phipps' work appears in numerous collections, including the permanent exhibitions at The Ashmolean Museum, Cheltenham Art Gallery, Dorset County Museum and many others, and is frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy. His woodblock prints are in high demand and are eagerly sought-out by collectors around the world.

This example depicts a small cottage and a byre nestled in the rolling landscape of the Dales, with the brooding presence of Pen-y-Ghent itself standing tall in the background below ominous clouds. It is No. 12 of 150 copies, as stated in pencil in the artist's own hand alongside his signature and the date it was created (2003). For such a small work, it is extraordinarily emotive - the Fell, almost 700 metres high in real life, looks distinctly threatening and dark and the clouds suggest a storm is coming, but the little stone cottage seems to offer sanctity from the elements, just as it has for centuries. As is typical for Phipps' work, the level of detail is astonishing, leaving no doubt that he is a true master of his technique.

The woodcut itself is 10 x 7.5cm (4 x 3") and is printed on fine, creamy acid-free Zerkall art paper, displayed within a 14 x 11.5cm (5.5 x 4.5") aperture cut into professional conservation board. This is then presented behind glass in a black wooden frame which is 31 x 30cm (12.25 x 12"). On the back is an A4 printed sheet giving some details on the production technique and a brief biography of the artist.

It will cost £8.56 million in 2020/2021 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. £4.29 million has currently been secured from the NHS, meaning that £4.27 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading.
