Description

Unless you are involved, or at the very least more interested than most, in the world of the Spanish classical guitar you may never have heard the name Ignacio M. Rozas. If you are, you almost certainly have.

Rozas was born in 1943 in the tiny village of Mesones de Uceda (population 427) in the central Spanish province of Guadalajara. The village has always been poor because it suffers a prolonged drought every year, and so until comparatively recently all but the children of the wealthiest families would have to give up school and find work long before they were adults. Rozas was not from a wealthy family, but he was good with his hands and so it was that one of the village's most skilled crafstmen, a cabinetmaker, took him on as an apprentice. The boy must have shown enormous talent, for the fine quality of his work brought him to the attention of José Ramírez III - the boss of the world famous Ramírez Guitars, as well as one of the greatest innovators in the history of the classical guitar and, many say, among the greatest luthiers of all time.

Ramirez clearly saw promise because, while Rozas seems to have had little knowledge of the guitar until that point, he offered the boy an apprenticeship. Rozas, then aged 16, accepted; he would work in Ramirez' factory for ten years until he met Manuel Careras - Careras had also worked for Ramirez in the past but had struck out on his own, designing and making his own guitars and had become known for being an even more talented luthier than his old boss. Rozas worked there for 17 years, then in 1987 decided it was time to start a workshop of his own.

With a background such as that and what was obviously an enormous helping of remarkable talent, it's no surprise that Rozas' guitars were very good indeed, and before too long he was being called one of the greatest luthiers too. He certainly had no trouble selling them, and one might have expected him to turn his workshop into a huge, profitable company, but he never did - he took on two staff, but he was content to continue as he was, making only a handful of guitars a year up until his retirement in 2008.

Once you've felt the quality of the cedar (Rozas feels cedar gives a better tone than the more common spruce) top and rosewood back and sides, then hear the remarkable, honeyed sweet voice of the Modelo 6, it seems almost unbelievable that this was his bottom-of-the-range guitar. All the Rozas hallmarks are there - the exquisite quality, the attention to detail, the pared-back bracing to keep it light and responsive and, first and foremost, the sounds it makes.

This one is in excellent condition. All guitars that are played pick up a few scuffs and scratches over the years no matter how much care you take of them, but this one is really rather remarkable - other than just a touch of wear to the rosewood fretboard, some extremely light scuffing to the bottom of the body and a few tiny dents in the purfling, it looks much the same as it would have done the day it was finished. It's a stunningly beautiful instrument, but it sounds even better than it looks.

The guitar is sold as seen in the photos, fully strung but without any accessories (the guitar stand is not included) - however, if we do happen to come across a suitable hard case before it sells, we'll use it and then ship the guitar in it (because it deserves it) at no extra cost to the buyer. If not, it will be shipped very well protected in shock-absorbing materials and a robust box.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
