Description

There are two ways to learn to play the guitar: the first is to find guitarist or pay a tutor to teach you, the second is to practice and learn the technique yourself. If you want to opt for the second route, it's now a lot easier thanks to the advent of sets such as this, with a guitar and everything you need to link it up to a computer and learn with tuition software.

There are plenty of different versions of these "teach yourself the guitar" kits available online, and they're all designed to teach users how to play the guitar from the very basics and all include a guitar, a cable which looks like a guitar cable but has a USB plug on one end instead of quarter-inch jackplugs on both end, and a software disc. However, very few have a guitar as good as this one - I was expecting some cheapo chipboard-bodied rubbish, so I was pleasantly surprised to find an instrument which features a proper wooden body (I'm guessing it's basswood), a maple neck and a rosewood fretboard. All in all, while you're almost certainly going to end up buying a better guitar if you decide you enjoy playing (because absolutely everyone does), this one is more than good enough for learning - and could even see you through your first gigs, too.

It's a fairly standard right-handed Stratocaster copy and full 4/4 size rather than the 3/4 size often found in these sets, though the scale length is slightly shorter than a real Strat at 24.5 inches. It has triple pick-ups with toggle selector, volume control, two tone controls and a whammy bar, and is supplied fully strung. As new, the action is set up very high and most users will want to switch over to a low or medium action; fortunately, the guitar has an adjustable bridge and comes with the hex keys to adjust it. Personally, I think that's a good thing - if you're going to learn the basics of playing a guitar, why not learn the basics of setting one up too?

The supplied software is Native Instruments' Guitar Ring 4 LE, more of an amp smiulation/audio modulation suite than tuition software but a useful bit of kit - it features a range of effects, presets designed to mimic different amps and much more. This version is designed around USB for seamless integration with guitars like this one and, accompanied by any of the various guitar tuition programs available online, does a good job of introducing new players to the remarkable range of sounds a guitar can make.

In addition, the set includes the 1/4-inch to USB cable, and it's another quality item which will stand up to years of use. Another benefit of being able to plug the guitar into the computer, of course, is it makes it possible to record your playing as WAV files for editing in any of the numerous audio suites.

The set is supplied in its original box, which is scuffed but in reasonable condition, and is missing the video cassette supplied with it when it was new. The contents appear to have seen very little use: the guitar has nearly new strings and is in very good condition throughout with an absence of significant wear and tear to the body, neck or fretboard and the bridge, keys and other metal parts are bright and free of corrosion - were it not for the light scratches to the pick guard, it would have been excellent condition. The cable is also in very good order and the CD Rom plays without any issues.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
