Description

When Peter Williams and Robert Shaw, the founders of premium fashion brand Jack Wills, were looking for financial branding to get the company off the ground, the "preppy, private school, collegiate" ethic behind their designs probably didn't sound like a recipe for success. However, they scraped together £40,000 and opened their very first shop, at Salcombe in Devon, in 1999 - and for the first few weeks, slept in the stockroom above the shopfloor. It all paid off - within a few months they opened a second shop in London, then more in Alderburgh, Eton, Oxford, Winchester, St Andrews, St Helier and Dublin, then several more including their first overseas stores in Hong Kong and Singapore. Now owned by Sports Direct, the company has remained true to its ethics and continues to design and sell premium garments inspired by English country set style as well as a more casual modern range, including blazers, tweed and this traditional diamond quilted jacket.

The shell is nylon with cotton trim and a comfortable cotton corduroy collar and a suprising bright floral cottonlining in pink, green, red and white. The polyester wadding is thin, being designed for practicality and easy movement while avoiding the "bundled up" feel of thicker jackets, but like all qualited jackets of this type is surprisingly warm. Jack Wills' famous logo, a pheasant wearing a top hat and carrying a walking cane, is embroidered on the left breast in pink thread; the label is sewn into the interior just below the collar. In keeping with its practicality, though unusual for a women's garment, it even features proper pockets - two external with pop studs and two internal with zips, all of them big enough to put things in and keep them there.

The jacket is in excellent condition throughout. It's clean and odour-free, suggesting that it has seen very little wear; there are no runs in the shell or lining and the wadding is evenly dispersed. The labels and logo are in fine order and all the pop studs and zips work correctly.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
