Three legendary British institutions - diecast toy manufacturer Lledo, Yorkshire Tea and the long-running TV series Heartbeat - came together to design and produce these three special edition promotional vehicles. Highly detailed and an accurate representation of the real vehicles they're based on, they appeal to a wider range of collectors than most diecast collectors and are becoming scarce in this superb condition complete with original packaging.

Yorkshire Tea is blended in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, an area which is steeped in tradition and famous for its outstanding country views - the same views which provided a beautiful backdrop to ITV's popular Heartbeat series which tells the stories of police officer PC Nicholas Rowan and his colleagues, family and friends around the fictional village of Aidensfield during the 1960s.

Lledo isn't from Yorkshire and was based in Enfield, London (the name is a reversal of founder Jack Odell's surname, incidentally, and was his radio call sign when he served in North Africa during the Second World War), but had a long and illustrious history of producing promotional and special edition diecast model vehicles; so, when Yorkshire Tea and the company behind Heartbeat decided to work together to produce a range of special collectable models based on vehicles from the series, it was Lledo they went to.

Odell had also been one of the three men behind the legendary Lesney company, manufacturers of the world-famous Matchbox diecast models, and he was able to purchase and recondition many of the Lesney molds so that Lledo could replicate the quality and detailing of Matchbox items - which means that, while less valuable than original Matchbox items in comparable condition, they're of interest to collectors and are increasing in value as the years go by. This is especially the case with the special edition models in special boxes, such as the three vehicles we have here.

The first is a Bedford 30cwt delivery van, painted cream and finished in the traditional Yorkshire Tea livery; like the real vehicle, it features dual rear wheels - just one of the many accurate details Lledo designed into the model.

The second is a Morris Z van in the standard dark blue colours used by numerous British police forces throughout the 196os and frequently seen in Heartbeat. It has chromed headlights, which is a nice touch, and unlike a real police van says "Home of Yorkshire Tea" on the back doors.

One of the most interesting features of Heartbeat was that it occasionally gave mention to the great sociological changes of the era, and the counterculture which transformed the way Britain looked. The third model very much reflects that: a Volkswagen Type 2, also known as a Kombi, Camper or Transporter (or, on account of the iconic split windscreen, a splittie), much beloved by hippies then and to this day. Like the Bedford, it's finished in Yorkshire Tea livery but of a very different style: bright orange with a multi-coloured rainbow running along the sides, it's very much the style adopted by many companies as they made radical changes to their promotional materials and vehicles to keep them relevant to the radical new tastes of the era.

All three remain in their original promotional boxes complete with plastic inserts and are in exceptionally fine condition, with no wear and tear - we strongly believe that, until we opened them up to take the photos, they had never been removed from the boxes. Two, the Morris and the VW, are still within their plain outer packaging as can be seen in the 11th photo. The boxes, which were designed by and feature the illustrations of the artist Mick Ashpool.

Change of Mind
