David James was the Conservative Member of Parliament representing Kemptown Brighton between the 8th October 1959 and the 25th September 1964 and then for North Dorset from the 18th June 1970 to the 7th April 1979. The son of Wing Commander Sir Archibald William Henry James, himself a Conservative MP, he was educated at Eton and served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. One would assume that he was an intensely serious, even humourless character; yet there are hints that he was rather more - after his ship was sunk and he ended up in a prisoner of war camp in Germany he escaped and walked across Germany with fake Bulgarian Army ID papers under the name of I. Bagerov ("I bugger off") and, despite being dressed in full British Navy uniform, got as far as the Baltic Sea before being arrested. A later attempt was successful, and he gave lectures on escape techniques at the Navy's Intelligence department.

What really marks him out from the herd, however, was his fascination with the Loch Ness Monster. Working with Sir Peter Scott (perhaps the most famous "monsterologist" of them all, and the man who though up Nessie's scientific name Nessiteras rhombopteryx*), in 1962 he founded the Loch Ness Phenomena Investigation Bureau - the publishers of this little paperback book. The LNPIB, incidentally, was very serious indeed: in 1967, it was awarded a grant from the World Book Encyclopedia to search for proof of the monster - equal to over £150,000 today.

There is no date of publication within the book, but references listed suggest some time around 1967 and it certainly dates to before 1972 when the LNPIB was wound up. It's more scholarly than expected, with an in-depth look at the ecology, flora and fauna of the loch used to explain how a creature similar to a plesiosaur might exist in it; it also maintains a healthy dose of scepticism when discussing various sightings over the years, and includes numerous black and white photographs (some of which I hadn't seen before, despite my great interest in Nessie as a voraciously-reading child).

It's in excellent condition, especially considering its age and the rather cheap manufacture - the cover shows some light wear and discolouration but remains firmly attached to the text block; there are no torn pages, annotation, foxing or other faults. Overall, a fascinating and hard-to-find book for anyone with an interest in Nessie, whether they believe the monster exists or are simply interested in the legend as an example of modern folklore.

*Famously, an anagram of "Monster hoax by Sir Peter S"

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
