Description

One of the largest diecast models ever produced by the legendary Lesney Matchbox company during the era of British manufacture, the K-39 Snorkel Fire Truck is also one of the best and features the high level of realistic detailing and movable parts that made it popular with children and adult collectors alike.

First introduced in 1979 (the date on the chassis) with orange-tinted window transparences, the K-39 underwent only minor changes over the thirteen years in which it was produced. This example has the blue-tinted windows that first appeared in 1986 and therefore dates to some point between then and the model's retirement in 1992.

The snorkel is fully articulated and rotates 360 degrees; it can be raised and lowered using the two red plastic wheels fitted to the side, which drive "hydraulic" rams in and out mimicking the way a real truck of this type operates. On the end is a self-levelling basket for the firefighter to stand in whilst battling blazes with the high-pressure mounted water cannon - which, unusually, is still firmly fixed in place, an unusual feature as this is quite a delicate piece and often snapped off. The truck also features twin stabilisers on both sides to keep it steady when fighting fires on uneven surfaces, a black rubber hose which can be unwound from the housing in the centre of the deck and a pump mechanism revealed by opening the compartment at the back.

The box has been lost and the model has been played with, so there are a few scuffs and scrapes and small patches of missing paint. However, it's in considerably better example that most other played-with examples: paint loss is limited to tiny chips on the front wheel arches, cab and deck corners and snorkel. The stickers are in place though peeling at the edges, the chrome instruments on the panels either side are clean and shiny and the stabilisers are all intact. There is some sticker residue on the roof of the cab, which has also lost one of its two blue lights; the window transparency is lightly scratched but free of cracks. All six wheels rotate freely on straight axles.

All in all, it's good enough to be displayed just as it is - but it's ripe for restoration and would look superb with very little work.

Change of Mind

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
