Description

Ever since digital photography killed off the compact film camera market, it's been possible to pick up basic models for a couple of quid. Not Olympus' AF series, however - thanks to the Japanese firm's insistance on using excellent quality lenses and electronics, they've held their value to the point at which mint condition examples now fetch higher prices than when they were brand new.

The AF-1, known in the USA as the Infinity, is both the very first model in the AF series and something of landmark in the history of photography too, because it was the world's first fully weatherproof, fully automatic 35mm compact; it was very popular in Japan where it was nicknamed the Nurepika ("the wet flash"). As stated already, Olymous never tried to save on manufacturing costs by fitting substandard lenses, and the AF-1 got a four-element/four group Zuiko which steps down to f/2.8, enabling it to freeze action in low light, a system far in advance of most other cameras in its class at the time and still better than many point-and-shoot digital cameras of today.

That was then backed up with an impressive selection of features including an excellent autofocus system that was comparable to some of the SLRs of the era (note the focus lock function, too - very useful when concentrating on a single subject when there's a lot going on around it), autoload and rewind, DX decoding and shutter range of 1/30-1/750 seconds. There's no override for shutter speed or flash, which would have been a nice addition; but it's also really not something that would ever have been used by the vast majority of people who bought an AF-1 - it's designed to be as simple to use as possible, yet with the ability to take the hard work out of shooting great photos time and time again.

Though expensive by compact standards when new, many AF-1s got binned as soon as their owners bought into digital and those that survived got passed on to children, so the majority of examples that show up are in poor condition. This one has been used and is definitely not mint, but it was looked after and probably then left in a cupboard or attic for decades and, as a result, is in far better shape than most - there's a little scuffing to the sliding lens cover and base, but the rest of the body is in fine fettle and free of scratches or cracks and there is no wear to the 1/4" tripod mount. The film compartment and battery compartment doors are in place and both open and latch closed as intended. There's a small amount of dust in the film compartment but not enough to be a concern, and the battery contacts are clean without corrosion. The lens is protected by a secondary cover made of clear plastic, which is clean without scratches and there is no signs of dust or fungal growth behind it; the viewfinder is bright with perhaps just a hint of haziness, but remains fully usable. The camera has been tested and was found to be in full working order - all features and functions, including the autofocus, autowind and flash are working correctly.

The camera is supplied with its original carry case, which is in good physical condition but discoloured. No other accessories and no original packaging is included.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
