Description

If you find yourself regularly breaking cameras or need one that can stand up to harsh conditions, the Olympus Mju Tough 3000 might be for you - it's full waterproof to 3 metres (10 feet), shockproof to 1.5 metres (5 feet) and will work in temperatures as low as -10°C (14° F). In other words, you'll be giving up and heading for home long before the camera does!

Building a camera as tough as that increases manufacturing costs, of course, but Olympus have always understood that there's no point in cutting corners - which is why their cameras hold their value so much better than almost any others. In this instance, they gave the camera a 1/2.3-inch 12 megapixel CCD sensor (which, while 12MP no longer grabs the headlines, translates to 3968 x 2976 pixels - greater than the 3840 x 2160 pixels of a 4K ultra high definition TV) and an excellent 10 element/8 group lens system with two aspherical elements and a zoom range from 5mm to 18.2mm - that's equivalent to wide angle 28mm to 3.6x zoomed in 102mm in 35mm SLR terms.

Aperture range isn't class-leading at f/3.5 to 5.1, but this is as expected for a camera designed for use in the great outdoors where ample light isn't at a premium - and even in dim rooms, the dual image stabilisation (true mechanical and digital) combined with an impressive for a compact 64-1600 ISO range will allow shutter speeds fast enough to avoid blur in the majority of situations.

Other than all that, it offers all the features we expect: autofocus, autofocus, numerous shooting modes, self timer, flash, 720P high definition video, macro, 5x digital zoom and a large and clear display. However, there's an unusual feature, reflecting its action cam intended purpose: Tap Control, allowing various features and controls to be accessed by tapping different parts of the camera's body - if you're planning to use it for selfies while participating in sports such as climbing, swimming, cycling and so on, with a bit of practice this could prove to be very useful.

The camera is in excellent condition and, when tested, proved to be in full working order. It has been used and, as a result, there are a few tiny scuffs, but these can only be seen on very close inspection and so not affect use in any way; the optics are clean and results as expected for a camera of this specification. A battery is included, but please note that we don't know how many charging cycles it's been through and as a result cannot guarantee it'll power the camera for the (approx.) 160 shots stated by the manufacturer.

We'll ship it with an after-market carry case, but no other accessories are supplied - in order to charge the battery in-camera and transfer files from the internal memory or without removing the SD card, you'll require an Olympus Multi-Terminal (USB Connector Audio/Video Output) cable, which is widely available in shops and online for as little as £4.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
