Description

• Title: The Origin of Species
• Author: Charles Darwin
• Publisher: John Murray
• Edition: 1902 reprint
• Format: Hard covers
• Dimensions: 14.5 x 20.5cm (5.75 x 5")

Also known as On the Origin of Species or, in full, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life), Charles Darwin's Origin of Species is one of the most world-changing, radical and frequently misnomered books in the history of science (it should never be "Origin of the Species"). In it, Darwin discusses the evidence he had gathered during the five-year second expedition of HMS The Beagle and his subsequent research, using them to support his argument that natural selection is the driving force of evolution. The book's importance cannot be overstated - it is the cornerstone of evolutionary biology, and the foundation of the modern Theory of Evolution.

This 1902 edition was published by John Murray of London, the same company that had published the first edition in 1859, and thus includes the Chapter VII Darwin had added in 1871 to address the arguments put forward by St. George Jackson Mivart in his own book Genesis of Species.

It is complete with no missing pages, including the fold-out tree diagram which is the original manuscript's only illustration (this edition also features a portrait of the great man); however, as an ex-library copy it's been well-read and is in a fairly poor state. The front and back covers are marked and, due to the damaged spine, are hanging on by only a few threads, and the outer layer of the spine has come away entirely but is at least still with the book, mamking repair possible. The inner front cover bears a pasted-in paper declaring the book to have been in the collection of the Stephenson Library at the Cambridge and County High School for Boys (which has since become Hills Road Sixth Form College), while the first flyleaf, which is loose, has a paper pocket for library cards and some annotation. The second flyleaf is also loose, but from this point onwards the remaining pages all remain bound - initially only just, but this improves after page 26. The next few pages have been damaged in the upper corner where the page numbers have been punched out but from page 45 onwards the text block is in a good state. Foxing is unusually limited - the very edges of the pages are yellowed, but the flat sections are very good. The tree diagram illustration is in near excellent condition.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
