Description

Penelope Chilvers was born and raised in England, where she trained as a painter. This led to a scholarship at Madrid's Complutense University and she fell in love with Spain, deciding to relocate to Barcelona for a few years after gaining her Masters Degree. There, she worked with local artists and artisans on a number of interesting projects including the restoration of the city's world famous Picasso Museum, and became fascinated by the locally produced footwear. After talking to some shoemakers who still use the centuries-old techniques passed down to them by their ancestors, she came up with a plan and enlisted several of them to help her design a version of the traditional riding boot worn in the region - that boot, known as the Long Tassel, remains the cornerstone of Chilvers' footwear company to this day and is known to be a favourite of Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. Back in England, Chilvers started her business from her kitchen table and orders from boutiques soon started piling in. It's grown a bit since then and offers a wide range of shoes and boots in many different styles - all of them carrying on the long tradition of fine English-designed footwear made in Spain by craftspeople using traditional techniques.

These gents' Derby-style shoes (similar to Oxfords, only with the eyelets visible above the vamp) are made of very high quality hair-on cowhide leather, adding significant interest to what would have otherwise have been a traditional and rather unremarkable - though very well made and luxurious - pair of shoes. The eyelets are brass, and the uppers are sewn to the soles with a woven natural fibre twine to match the laces; like all Chilvers shoes, the inners are soft with a leather insole featuring padding under the heel for extra shock-absorbing comfort. The soles are synthetic, with a reliable grip.

They've been worn but very little, and remain in excellent condition. The uppers are clean without damage, though being made of natural leather there are some minor imperfections which should not be seen as faults, the inners are also clean without odours. There is very light wear to the soles, but this is minor and they'll be good for many more miles. Please note that they will be supplied in generic packaging.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
