Playmobil figures look simple, but it took inventor Hans Beck four years to get the design right: first, he looked at children's drawings of faces to come up with something that all children of all cultures would recognise as a friendly, happy face, then he spent a long time working out exactly what degree of flexibility they should have, reasoning that too little would make them frustrating to play with and too much would make them too expensive, and then what size they should be - he settled on 7.5cm because it fits nicely into the hands of children aged between 4 and 12.

It paid off - Playmobil made over three million Deutschmarks in 1974, the year the toys were introduced, and went global in 1975; well over 2.2 billion Playmobil figures have been made and the company now enjoys profits of over half a billion US $ per year. There are now three factories in Germany, Spain and Malta, and the figures and toysets are sold in every country of the world. In addition to enormous popularity among children, Playmobil has been warmly reviewed by parents, teachers and psychologists too, who argue that it improves dexterity and helps children to develop social skills.

Play set 9132 is one of the largest Playmobil has ever made and, when new, it retails at over £300. As would be expected, it contains a lot of parts - the exact figure isn't listed on the packaging, but it's several hundred and many of them are very small and fiddly. Playmobil say that setting it up takes around an hour, and most younger children will require assistance from an adult (it took me - aged 47, with lots of Lego experience - a little over an hour without instructions), but it's worth it: the fairy glade will delight all children, and with three fairy figures, a cauldron, musical instruments and plenty of animals included there's hours of fun to be had.

The figures are the Fairy Queen with wand, a golden-haired younger female fairy and a young male fairy. The animals, which live in caves under the hillock or in the trees above it, include a unicorn and unicorn foal, fox with two cubs, a peacock, various butterflies and dragonflies and two two-headed snakes (and, unique to this example, a rather old goose from another range of toys - but this is the Queen of the Fairies, so she can have any pets she wants). Extra items include the cauldron with stirring spoon, a spell book, the Queen's throne, musical instruments, a bottle containing gold glitter, "precious jewels", hanging flower lanterns and a pink canopy to hang from the trees. All of these parts are in excellent condition. There is also a swing; however, this item is broken and will need to be repaired in order to be used. After setting up, it appears to be missing a treasure chest and one half of a pair of fairy wings - we have checked carefully but, with so many small parts and no instruction manual, cannot guarantee that these are the only missing pieces. It is supplied in the original retail packaging.

Change of Mind

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
