Description

Launched in the United Kingdom in 1978, the Polaroid Instant 10 is very typical of its time with lots of chunky black plastic and has become something of a design classic.

It offers a little more scope for adjustment than some of the more basic Polaroids, having a means to adjust aperture (a dial on the front, with simplified light to dark gradations rather than the more usual f/ stops; though the camera is able to adjust automatically with a reasonable degree of success) and even focal adjustment - the helical mount Polartriplet lens can focus from 1 metre to infinity. Two further features are the optional flash cube socket and a battery compartment - later models were fitted with a built-in flash, while later Polaroid film cartridges contained a battery to power the cameras that used them. It also has a lockable shutter button to prevent misfires, which would have been a welcome additon to the Intant 10's black and white ancestor the Super Swinger due to the price of Polaroid film.

The camera retains its cold clip, two sections of sheet aluminium joined by a tough tape hinge which slides into a section on the rear of the body. Polaroid film requires heat to develop - at 30 degrees Celsius, Type 80 will develop in about a minute, whereas at 10 degrees it will take around three minutes and in the low single digits it woun't develop at all. So, Polaroid developed the cold clip to speed things up below 18 degrees: the undeveloped photograph is placed between the two sheets and the clip is then held between the arm and body to warm it up - simple and a little odd, but it works. Both sides of the cold clip are printed with instructions, which includes the code 5/77 - this indicates that it was made in 1977 and, as such, is one of the very earliest examples.

This example has been bench tested, though we can't carry out a full test due to a lack of correct film. The battery caddy is in excellent order and the contacts are clean; with two AA batteries fitted the shutter fires correctly and the aperture adjustment can be seen to work. The light seals are in good order and the film compartment door opens smoothly and latches firmly into position. There's a little old, dried film residue inside, but this can be easily removed if you wish to use the camera (assuming you can find the right film, of course). There are a few light and entirely cosmetic marks on the body, but overall it's in better condition that most examples we see without any deep scratches or cracks; the plate around the lens is intact though a little dirty. The scene finder, which rotates and pokes out from the left side, is in place, as is the clear cover over the flash cube socket. Most importantly - and unusually, as Polaroids frequently ended up as children's toys - the optics are very clean without scratches or smears; there is only a tiny amount of dust behind the lens and no fungus, and the viewfinder is clear and bright. The original packaging is lost, but it retains the black nylon neck strap.

• Please note that Type 80 film has not been produced for many years and stocks of vintage film are extremely difficult to find; however, some photographers have successfully modified other formats to fit. With that in mind, we recommend this item for collectors, artistic/experimental photographers and lomographers only.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its 'Outstanding' services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

More than 4,100 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients' own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Day Therapy and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £8.56 million in 2020/2021 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. £4.29 million has currently been secured from the NHS, meaning that £4.27 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
