• Title: Practical Fishing for the So Called Coarse Fishes
• Subtitle: A Complete Guide To Every Branch Of Float-Fishing, Legering, Spinning, Trolling, And Line-Baiting On River, Lake, And Stream
• Author: J.W. Martin ("The Trent Otter")
• Publisher: C. Arthur Pearson Ltd.
• Edition: 1906
• Format: Hard covers
• Pages: 143
• Dimensions: 12.75 x 19.2cm (5 x 7.6")

J.W. Martin was born in the waterlogged Fens of Lincolnshire in 1852, a time when fishing was for most people not a sport or hobby but a means of providing food for the table, and for that reason has been described as having been born to be an angler. Like most boys from a working class background he left school at the age of ten and was expected to go out and find work, earning a pittance as a canal boat boy, farmyard help, bricklayer’s labourer and blacksmith’s assistant - all low-paid jobs with wages that certainly wouldn't have stretched as far as the latest fishing gear so he had to learn to make his own, also digging his own bait, and so he learned every aspect of angling.

It would soon turn out that he had a talent, and before too long he was making and selling rods and other equipment to other anglers too. This earned him enough that by the early 1870s, whilst still a young man, he was able to open his own tackle shop in Newark. Despite his limited education he also wrote - his first book, Float Fishing and Spinning in the Nottingham Style, was published soon after he opened his shop, and rapidly became a must-read for the anglers of Nottinghamshire and beyond. His later books were equally popular and sold in large numbers, making him a wealthy man, but he never forgot where he had come from and insisted that the books were priced so as to be affordable to the common working man, whilst he also strove to make sure that the equipment he sold offered the very best combination of quality and low prices. Practical Fishing exemplifies that. It's not a book about chasing exotic species in exotic locations, nor about travelling in search of record-breaking fish - it's about exploring your local rivers with basic kit, and catching the best fish that live there.

During his lifetime, Martin was possibly the most popular fishing writer in Britain, but he was somewhat surprisingly quickly forgotten after his death in 1925, and remained so throughout the rest of the 20th Century. In recent years, however, his work has been rediscovered - by anglers wishing to take a step back from the high-tech world of the sport today and return to the simple pleasures of catching fish and even by people who have no interest in getting any closer to a fish than a can of tuna but appreciate his beautiful writing style, and as a result his books are increasing in value and becoming hard to find.

This rare first edition example is, considering it's 116 years old, in remarkably good condition. The hardcovers ( which are green; some examples are yellow; the reverse features an advert for the legendary Hardy Bros. tackle shop of Northumberland) are in excellent order and the spine is intact, while the binding is tight - the contents page, with a photograph of Martin on the back, is loose but as a result of accidental tearing rather than structural damage to the book, and the remainder of the pages are firmly affixed. Due to Martin's assistance on affordability (it was 1 shilling when new), the paper used is fairly low quality and thus does display some yellowing and foxing, but only to a surprisingly low degree. There is no annotation at any point, and you'll be very lucky indeed to find a better copy than this.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
