Description

Made in Switzerland around the end of the 1960s or early 1970s, this Technos mechanical watch has seen some use and picked up a few scuffs - but the fact that it's still in full working order is testament to the excellent build quality and it won't take much time or effort to transform it into an enviable retro classic.

Watchmaker M. Gunzinger-Hug was founded in Welschenrohr in the Jura Mountains in 1900 and began using the Technos name in 1924. Highly successful from the early days, the company was known to create highly accurate and reliable timepieces and enjoyed healthy sales in many countries around the globe right up until the middle of the 1970s when, like so many other Swiss companies, it began to feel the pinch due to ever-cheaper Far Eastern watches flooding worldwide markets; nevertheless, the firm held out until 1982 when it passed into Japanese ownership - the brand still exists today, but the watches haven't been made in Switzerland since then and now use mass-produced movements.

Back in the glory days Technos, like so many other Swiss manufacturers, licensed the Incabloc shock protection system that had been developed just before the Second World War: using a lyre-shaped spring to support the balance wheel, thus enabling components both to better withstand shock and, by allowing them to slightly shift their settings in response to impact and vibration, keep more accurate time. It was one of the first truly effective shock protection systems available for wristwatches and soon became a popular feature on the best watches, thus serves as a useful mark of quality: if it says Incabloc, it's a good quality watch - especially when combined with an antimagnetic 17-jewel movement as is the case here.

Very much a style of its time, the polished case is in fine shape overall but as with all but the very best-kept watches of this age does have light surface scratches - fortunately, none of them serious enough that a proper polish won't return it to looking almost as good it did when it was brand new some half a century ago. The champagne coloured sunburst face has some dust but this too is minor and will be very easy to remove, especially if the owner chooses to replace the original hardened plastic "crystal" with a proper glass one - there's no requirement to do as it's not cracked nor particularly scratched, but glass will look better. The indices are thin, plain gold batons with the exception of the 12 which is in gold Arabic numerals and the 6, with is a V making room for the second dial, while the 3 is replaced with the date indicator.

The back is stainless and, in addition to informing us about the 17-jewel antimagnetic Incabloc movement also tells us the watch is water resistant. The strap is an expanding bracelet-type Fixo-Flex model, a little tarnished with age but in excellent and very usable condition - like the crystal, it's probably been fitted to the watch ever since it was new.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
