Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster comic novels about the naive, unintelligent, fabulously wealthy and yet decent young aristocrat Bertie Wooster and his worldly, dignified, highly intelligent and ever-faithful butler Jeeves have been best-sellers in Wodehouse's native Britain and overseas ever since the pair made their first apperance more than a century ago and, over the course of almost sixty years, appeared in 35 short stories and 11 novels. They're still popular today, and as a result first editions are hard to find.

The series is correctly known as Jeeves, because the butler is the main character; however, Wooster appears in them all with the exception of this one - instead, Jeeves is temporarily in the employ of the 9th Earl of Rowcester Bill Belfry. The Earl lives in rather reduced circumstances and the family fortune is almost extinguished, but he's recently met the love of his life and wants to keep and restore his near-derelict ancestral home Rowcester Abbey in order to impress his bride-to-be. Jeeves, as always, has a plan to make money - after the butler enlists the help of a shady character going by the name of Honest Patch Perkins, the Earl embarks on a new career as a bookmaker...

It's a first edition, published by Herbert Jenkins of London in 1953 and published by Wyman & Sons of London, Fakenham and Reading. The dust jacket, which depicted Belfry's love interest Jill Wyvern, has been lost but the hardcovers remain in good condition despite some minor discolouration on the front. The spine is in good condition and the binding is loosening but still intact, so there are no loose or missing pages. Its first home was the library of Aldenham School in Hertfordshire, which was then boys only, and it bears the library's stamp on the first flyleaf as well as a small sticker showing that it later found its way to the Foyles bookshop in Charing Cross and there is also foxing throughout the textblock; however, other than these there are no other marks or annotation at any point.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
