Description

Royal Albert's Old Country Roses design vase features delicate floral decoration in pink, yellow and green with hand-applied brushed gold accents to the rim and base and is still in production to this day some sixty years after it was first introduced; it is widely considered to be the most popular china pattern in the world.

This vase is one of the signature pieces in the range stands 23cm (9 inches) tall with a maximum width of 13cm (5 inches). The backstamp bears the date 1962 and it's common to see Old Country Roses items listed as having been made that year; however, this is the year the design gained a copyright, rather than the date of manufacture, and so we need to look more closely. On earlier pieces, the printed backstamp looks almost hand-written, albeit by someone with an extremely steady hand, whereas on more modern examples such as this one it was clearly applied using a computerised system. The next thing to note is whether it says "England" or "Made in England" - the former was used up until 1974, the latter since then. Next on the list is the ® registered trademark symbol, used since 1993 when Royal Albert's parent company Royal Doulton separated from the Pearson Group of companies; this one has it. Then, in 1998, manufacture moved to Indonesia so "Made in England" disappeared - since this one was made in England, we know it was made at some point from 1993 to 1998.

It's in very good condition with two minor firing flaws, one of which is between two of the floral motifs on the sides and another on the base. There are also some small scratches on the gilding to the rim (see photos), and some residue inside caused by the vase being used to display flowers. There are no chips, cracks or repairs, and the glaze is free of crazing. Overall, a very good collectable condition example of an attractive piece of traditional Royal Albert porcelain.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
