Description

Sandstrøm is an in-house brand used by the well-known British electricals retailer Curry's for their range of designer modern and retro digital radios, including some based on the classic analogue sets of the 1950s and 1960s and others in the sleek, Swedish-influenced style such as this S6VDAB12.

Very clearly based on a certain popular portable model by a certain British manufacturer which may or may not rhyme with "Cure", it does a very good job of getting the look yet coming in at a far lower price point (in fact, we sold one of those certain popular portable models for more than three times this much a few a days ago). It also does a better than expected job of delivering decent sound quality - it might not quite match a pricier radio, but it comes surprisingly close despite only having a mono 3-inch speaker thanks largely to the tuned bass port hidden away around the back, which adds depth and richness.

It lacks some of the features of more expensive radios, though this can be seen as an advantage: if you find DAB complicated to set up and use and yearn for the days when listening to the radio was a simple matter of pressing an on switch and turning the dial until you found something you wanted to hear, then this could be the radio for you - there are none of the confusing nested sub-menus giving access to multiple functions you'll probably never use. Just switch it on, let the autotune do its stuff, then sit back and enjoy - or select a favourite station from the presets. Most of the important stuff can be accessed via one push of a button - switching from DAB to FM, setting the alarm, adjusting backlight brightness (with only three levels - dim, medium, bright - it's straightforward but does everything you need), presets; while manual tuning is easy too thanks to the dial on the front and clear LCD display.

Unlike some affordable DAB radios, the manufacturer hasn't tried to save a few beans on the tuner, either: we get very weak signals here at our rural South Cambs warehouse yet, in comfortably under a minute, autotune had located 30 stations - we've tested some £100+ DAB radios that couldn't find that many, and in much of the UK you'll be able to receive several more.

This example has no original packaging, so it'll be shipped in a generic box. However, it does retain both the owner's manual (which is as cleverly laid out and simple to understand as the radio) and a UK-type mains adaptor - please note that this model is mains only and cannot run on battery power. It's also been professionally PAT tested and is certified safe to use. It has seen some light use but it in excellent condition - there are one or two very light scuffs to the front fascia and some minor scratches to the clear cover over the display, but these are hardly visible when in use. The wood is in excellent condition without scratches and all the buttons and dials are in place, as are the four rubber feet that prevent it scratching polished shelves or tables, and - most importantly of all, it's in full working order with all features and functions operating correctly.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
