Description

Model: Shadow X
Type: Quadcopter
Class: A2 (licence free)*

Free economy delivery within the UK!

The Shadow X is a small, lightweight and easy to fly drone which won much admiration when released for the range of features it offered at a very affordable price - the build quality, foldable pylons and rotors and fully-functioning camera are all features usually only found on drones costing many times more.

It's been designed first and foremost to be an ideal first drone for younger pilots with numerous features to make it easy to fly - a 6-axis gyroscope for rock-solid stability and a gravity sensor which can detect an imminent crash and automatically guide the drone to a safe landing are very welcome features, as are the nylon rotors which offer plenty of flexibility to avoid damage if it does suffer a crash, and range is limited to approximately 80 metres making it far harder to lose track of its location and lose it - though if you do lose sight of the drone, simply press the 1-Key Return button and it'll automatically fly back to you.

The 720p camera might seem nothing to shout about in this day and age when many amateur drones feature 4k resolution or greater, but it has a big advantage - it uses very little power, allowing the battery to continue operating for as long as 15 minutes (also the maximum length of video storable in the built-in memory) rather than draining it in five minutes or so as a higher resolution camera would. It's also worth remembering that 720p is equal to 1280x720 pixels - equal to a standard high definition TV and more than good enough for quality still photos and videos. Plug the drone into a computer via the USB and you'll be impressed by how good it is.

For beginners, the Shadow X comes supplied with a wireless handset much like those used for radio controlled cars, featuring up, down, left, right, forwards and back directional control and a steady hover function in addition to the return feature, while extra controls on the top set the speed to high or low and switch the camera and the drone's lights on and off; it also has optional foldable handles to make it easier for small hands to grip. For the full experience, the drone can be controlled via Wi-Fi equipped smartphone attached to the controller with the bracket supplied - by doing so, you get a "drone's eye view" on the phone screen, showing you exactly what the drone camera is seeing.

The Shadow X is supplied in a padded protective case with a custom foam insert providing secure compartments for the drone, controller and two batteries (supplied), along with a section for accessories. Accessories with this one are USB cables for the drone and the controller, the phone bracket, four option undercarriage skids for easier landing and four sets of replacement rotors; a manual is also included, but it's badly translated and finding one online is recommended.

Tested and found to be in full working order, the drone and all accessories are in very good condition. It has been flown and, like all used drones, has some light scratches from previous collisions; these are extremely minor and do not affect use in any way. The controller also has some light marks but is fully functional with all buttons, switches and other features operating correctly. Both batteries charge and power the drone, though we're unable to guarantee their longevity. The case is in excellent condition without damage beyond light marks, and the zip is in excellent order.

*Note: Class A2 refers to drones weighing less than 250g and fitted with a camera. No CAA licence is required for this class, but certain regulations apply: the drone should not be flown by pilots under 12 years of age without adult supervision and operator ID should be carried (there is no requirement for ID to be displayed on the drone itself). Please note that drone regulations change rapidly to keep up with changing technology; it is the responsibility of the owner to ensure they fly legally.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
