Description

Sony's DSC-P200 has been around for a few years now, but thanks to its excellent lens and sensor, wide range of features, superb screen and rugged build quality it's still one of the better compact point-and-shoot digital cameras around.

First, the lens. Sony, back when they entered the digital camera market, very wisely decided that they'd stick to what they do best - electornics, and packing them into small spaces - and would leave the lenses to someone with more experience: hence they went to the German company Zeiss, which was established in 1846 and is widely considered the best lens maker in the world, and so the little P-200 is fitted with a superb Zeiss Vario-Tessar system featuring a three-group, seven element system of which three are aspherical - designed to eliminate optical aberrations right across the zoom range, and a considerably more advanced system that fitted to many DSLR cameras even today. Good glass is arguably the most important factor in any camera, but if the sensor isn't up to the job it's still not going to result in good photos: fortunately, a 1/1.8" CCD definitely is up to the task, and thanks to being larger than the 1/2.3" sensors fitted in most other compacts (bigger sensor = bigger photosites) it can produce results with comparable fine detail to cameras with far higher resolution.

Looking at the specs, two apparent limitations are the relatively low optical zoom and maximum ISO (light sensitivity). 3x doesn't sound much today when many compacts offer 10x or more, but Sony's Precision and Smart digital zoom technology is remarkably effective at limiting the noise and fuzziness that tends to mar shots taken with digital zoom - there'll always be the loss of resolution when compared to optical zoom, but photos which if taken on any other camera would be useless are often acceptable with Sony. Up to 6x, the maximum with Precision digital, results are better than expected; and for the majority of users that's going to be plenty. As for ISO, 400 is low when compared to modern cameras, but the P200 has an ace up its sleeve: Hole-Accumulation Diode (HAD) technology built into the sensor allows it to gather more light, enabling it to keep on taking sharp photos in much lower light than a standard sensor at ISO 400.

Finally, the build quality. The P200 is by no means an action cam, but with its aluminium shell it can withstand a few knocks far better than a plastic bodied camera. That, combined with its excellent range of features and ability to take shap, perfectly-exposed photos has made it a popular budget choice for hikers, cyclists, climbers and others who need a camera that can survive a little bit of rough handling. An unusual feature is that the P200 has a 30mm screw-on filter thread, allowing it to be used with a range of filters as well as compatible wide-angle and teleconverter lenses, as well as a port for a slave flash unit.

This one has been professionally PAT tested and was declared to be safe to use. It's also been bench tested and was found to be in full working order. It has some minor cosmetic faults, most notably light scuffs to the front fascia and some scratches on the screen, but these do not affect use at all; the scratches on the screen are almost invisible when in use. There is light wear to the plastic tripod bushing, but this is very minor and will not prevent the camera being mounted; the card/battery compartment cover is attached, opens and closes properly and there is no dirt nor corrosion to the contacts. All features and functions, including the flash and all controls, are working perfectly. Most importantly, the optics are excellent without scratches, smears or other issues, there is no dust or detritus within the barrel and both the focussing and zoom are smooth and accurate. The item is supplied in its original retail packaging complete with battery (charges, not tested for longevity), charger and other accessories.

What's In The Box?: Sony DSC-P200 digital camera, wrist strap, Sony NP-FR1 li-on battery, Sony BC-CSGB battery charger with UK-type mains adaptor, combined USB/AV cable, Cyber-Shot Application software/ImageMixer VCD2 CD-ROM, printed manual and other literature - please note that storage media is not supplied (Memory Stick is widely available in shops and online).

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
