"Seebohm Rowntree is widely known for his studies of poverty and for his writings on industrial relations. The first are familar to sociologists; they represented pioneer attempts to measure the extent of poverty and to relate it to social background. The second are still talked about by businessmen, managers and industrial consultants: these also were pioneer surveys of 'the human factor in business' and of 'industrial democracy'. Less well-known is Rowntree's contribution to twentieth-centurypolitics. He was a formulative thinker in the Liberal revival of the early twetieth century, and a close collaborator with Lloyd George before 1914, during the First World War, and after 1918. He was one of the architects of the 'welfare state'. Among his other studies were works on agriculture, old age, leisure and housing. Among his practical activities were several important and revealing exercises in industrial conciliation, including an effort to encourage the miners to reach a satisfactory settlement after the General Strike. In many ways, therefore, Rowntree's life touched modern life, and his personal biography may be regarded at the same time as a social biography of twentieth century Britain.

This book covers Rowntree's activities in different fields and seeks to assess their significance. It is based on careful study of unpublished private papers and other research. It shows both specialists and general readers that behind the anonymous forces and trends of twentieth century history there have been real people abd that Rowntree is one of the most interesting and significant of them."

This 1961 first edition copy of the eminent historian Asa Briggs' study of the philanthropist Seebohm Rowntree's efforts to first prove that abject poverty existed outside London (the rather bizarre general consensus at the time was that it did not) and then find ways to both alleviate it and convince other wealthy industrialists that doing so was both desirable and necessary is still highly respected today and features on the sociology, modern history and politics reading lists of many colleges.

It retains its original dust jacket, which is showing signs of age - it's discoloured and has some rips, but is not torn through and, with the exception of a very small patch on the spine, has no missing sections. The hardcovers beneath it, however, are almost pristine with only a slight dent at the bottom of the spine - there is no staining or discolouration; the spine is structurally sound and has not been fully cracked. The binding is tight so that there are no loose or missing pages; there is a price in pencil ont he first endpaper but no inscriptions and, while there is some yellowing and foxing (most obviously on the very edges of the pages, though also on the faces in some instances) the remainder of the text block is in very good condition and free of annotation.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
