Beatrix Potter needs no introduction - she is world famous as the author of numerous children's books which remain as popular today, almost eighty years after her death, as when they were published. What few fans realise is that Potter was also a highly respected natural scientist; the highly detailed drawings she produced during her research are the reason the illustrations she made for her books are so good.

The Tale Of Mr. Tod is the 18th of the famous "23 Tales" series of books she wrote featuring the adventures of Peter Rabbit and his friends (and enemies - including Mr. Tod the fox, and his cohort Tommy Brock the badger), and is notable for being the first of the series to be published in a new, larger format of which Potter disapproved; the following title, The Tale of Pigling Bland, was also published in this format, but the remaining books returned to the miniature format their author preferred. By 1912, children's literature was already undergoing a clean-up, with dark themes being frowned upon; countrywoman Potter also disapproved of this and makes it clear that Mr. Tod and Tommy plan to eat the baby rabbits, though they are saved by Peter and his rabbit friends.

This is a first edition, published in 1912 by Frederick Warne & Co., and features numerous illustrations of which 15 are full-page colour plates painted by Potter in watercolours; the remainder are black and white in ink (and are, according to some fans, even more charming than the colour illustrations).

It is complete without missing pages or plates and in good condition considering its 110 years, but does have some faults; the most notable of these is that the spine has come completely detached from the covers and has been unsympathetically replaced with white adhesive tape - however, the original spine is preserved in the back of the book and, for someone with the necessary skills and careful application of solvents, it might be possible to repair the damage. The front cover, with a colour picture of Mr. Tod, has some indentations but is otherwise unmarked, while the back has some light water damage and two lines left by a pink felt-tip pen, and the corners are a little scuffed. The binding is loose, though not to the point that any pages are falling out; there is foxing throughout the textblock but, other than a previous owner's name pencilled into the first of the illustrated flyleaves, there is no annotation, scribbles or well-meant colouring-in.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
