Description

Title: Titian Blue Dribble
Artist: Lindsay Simons (1953 - present)
Features: Original; signed on reverse
Produced: 2011
Medium: Oils on canvas
Framing: Unframed
Dimensions (approx.): 50 x 100cm (19.75 x 39.5 inches)

An artist whose work is becoming widely recognised in her native Britain, the US and beyond, Lindsay Simon recreates depictions of the women who appear in the great paintings by the Old Masters and then adapts them with her own modern technique to create unique images, combining classical and contemporary styles with the aim of exploring how social constructs of female beauty and identity have changed - or remain unchanged - after the passage of hundreds of years.

In this work she has taken the likeness of Isabella d'Este, the fabulously wealthy patron of the Italian Renaissance who was a friend of Da Vinci and ruled her own city state, as she appears in Titian's 1530s masterpiece Isabella in Black (Portrait of Isabella d'Este); her ability to recreate Titian's original reveals her to be in possession of very high technical skills indeed. Around this, she has first applied a decorative floral knotwork pattern in thin white paint, followed by a pale blue wash before finishing off with semi-abstract dribbles progressing from medium to dark blue. It's a unique, distinctive and eye-catching piece which encourages the viewer to ponder its meaning; it is currently unframed, and my personal opinion is that it should stay that way and be displayed upon a plain white background.

An authentic, original, one-off piece, it is featured on Simons' own website ( https://lindsaysimons.wixsite.com/artist/paintings?lightbox=dataItem-j441j12j) and her signature appears on the back. Also on the back are two labels revealing that it was put on sale by the Cambridge gallery Byard Art at a show in New York, presumably the Affordable Art Fair at which Byard Art is something of a fixture and has become known for highlighting the work of contemporary British artists. It's not clear if it sold on that occasion, nor is its history since then available; however, an online search reveals some of her similar paintings selling through well-known galleries for over £3000.

At first glance, there is what appears to be a pale brown stain in the bottom third of the painting - however, when compared to the original (as seen in the final photograph; please note that this image is for comparison only and is not part of the lot), this turns out to be the colours of the lower part of Isabella's ermine collar which was covered with the blue wash and dribbles. Despite being unframed, the painting is in excellent condition. The colours are bright and vibrant and there are no marks or discolouration; it has been well-kept away from direct sunlight to protect from fading. The canvas has no tears or fraying and its framework is structurally sound.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
