Description

Unveiled on the 2nd of March in 1987 to celebrate Canon's fiftieth year in business, an EOS 650 was used to take a photo of Les Horribles Cernettes, an all-female band formed by employees at CERN, which thanks to Tim Berners-Lee became in 1992 the very first photo ever uploaded to the World Wide Web.

Immediately popular with professionals and keen amateurs alike, it was also the first model in what would become the enormous EOS range of film and digital cameras. A brand new design built around the newly-developed BASIS processor, it was also the first to get an illuminated top panel LCD display and the first to support Canon's new EF lens system with autofocus lenses powered by ultrasonic motors for faster, more precise focus than ever before - the system is still used throughout the EOS range to this day, so there's a massive number of compatible lenses for the camera.

Canon also worked on usability, realising that cameras were becoming overly complicated - the 650 rapidly became known for being both easy to use and easy to get excellent results, which has led to it still being very popular today especially with photographers who grew up with DSLRs and are dipping their toes into the film world for the first time: shooting with it is a breath of fresh air compared to high-end digital cameras - nothing hidden away in obscure sub-menus, all controls adjusted by the buttons right there on the camera's shell (or under the little flap at the back).

This one is an early example, as we can find out from the code printed inside the film compartment: FB0713. F tells us it was made at Canon's Fukushima plant, while B refers to 1987 and 07 to the month, June (nobody knows what the last two numbers mean). It's seen some use and as a result has a few scuffs and scratches on the outer shell, but there is no serious damage such as cracks or missing parts. The film compartment door opens and locks closed precisely and, when tested by placing a bright LED inside and checking in a darkened room, there was no evidence of light leakage. There's a little dust inside, but the mirror is clean. Most importantly, when tested with a dummy film, it proved to be in full working order - it switches on and off, the shutter works, autofocus is accurate (and whilst not even nearly comparable to a modern DSLR, it must have seemed phenomenally fast back in 1987), and all other features and functions do what they should.

There is no notable wear to the lens mounts, allowing the two supplied lenses to lock on without any hint of wobble. Both lenses are official Canon items: the first is a useful 35-80mm f/4-5.6 with 52mm filter thread (full Canon name: Canon Zoom Lens EF 35-80mm 1:4-5.6 III, current value if sold alone approx. £45), the other a 75-300mm f/4-5.6 long zoom with 58mm filter thread (full Canon name: Canon Zoom Lens EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III, current value if sold alone approx. £140) - enough to cover the vast majority of uses, from casual snapshots to portraits, landscapes, group shots and even sports. As with the camera, both are in decent shape and have been well looked after, with lens caps used - the 35-80mm will be supplied fixed to the camera body, the 75-300mm has both a lens cap and an end cap. The 35-80mm has plastic mounts but these show no wear; the 75-300mm has metal mounts and again show no wear. Optics in both cases are excellent and, while there is a tiny amount of dust inside the barrels, this will not affect results.

We'll also throw in the blue camera bag (which is big enough for the camera and both lenses - they're both in it in the photo) for free, because we are total legends :-)

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
