Founded in Vienna in 1919, Elektrizitäts und Metallwaren Industrie Gesellschaft produced a number of small electrical items (and cigarette cases, for some reason) and grew rapidly, already employing 65 people two years later when they began to build high end electronics under the acronym Eumig.

Around 1928 the company began showing an interest in film and cinema equipment, designing and developing several machines that would play an important role in the early European film industry. In 1931 the firm introduced their first projector, known as the Eumig P.1, then set about improving it; it was followed in 1935 by the world's first movie camera with semi-automatic tracking exposure control and two years later the world's first amateur movie camera for home use - which then drove the development of a range of improved professional and home projectors.

In 1965, Kodak brought Super 8 film to the market. Eumig were the first, and for some time the only, European manufacturer to produce cameras and projectors compatible with the format, but well aware that it would take a few years for Super 8 to replace earlier 8mm formats decided that a projector able to play the three most popular 8mm formats was the way forward - which led in 1967 to this model, the Eumig Mk-S-709, the only projector in the world able to play Super 8, Standard 8 and Single 8 and fitted with a unique three-valve amplifier for audio quality far superior to anything else on the market. Google it and there's no end of enthusiast reviews insisting the Mk-S-709 is one of the best, if not the best, projectors of all time. Needless to say, it was priced at the upper end of the market - $380 when brand new, which allowing for inflation would be $3330 today.

Sadly, this one isn't supplied with a power cable (it accepts the older, larger two-pin P8 type, which is fortunately easy to find online) and as a result we haven't been able to test it - the projector was supplied to us for sale by a good friend of mine who says it was in full working order when he last used it and it has been stored in dry conditions since then, though this was some years ago and we're therefore specifying that it is sold as seen and may require some attention. It would most certainly be worthwhile if so, because from the moment the Mk-S-709 is picked up it's very clear that it's an extremely well-made machine.

Overall condition is very good though, as can be seen in the photos it's showing some signs of age of which the most notable is the perishing glue used to stick the various badges and decorative plates to the machine and its cover - however, none have been lost and fixing them back into position will take seconds; meanwhile, there are no deep scratches or similar faults, so a good clean will have it looking almost as good as it did when it was only a couple of years old. It retains its original box, though as can also be seen in the photos it's not in the best shape, along with the polystyrene inserts.

All in all, a historic projector and, nearly six decades since it was made, still one of the finest ever produced.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
